I have a hamilton pan europ that I got for right around $1k. it was lightly used but aside from having a different strap on it (which I prefer) you'd never know. if you're ok w used, keep an eye on eBay and TZ sales corner for one. for the money, you can't beat it.

This Victorinox Divemaster is one of my more casual watches. I wear it a lot in the summer time. It's an automatic with a see-through case back and keeps excellent time. I bought it at Amazon a few years ago for $750. At the time it was sold/shipped by Amazon (not "Perfect Timing" as is listed currently). Here's a stock photo:

And like velopod, I wear it more than my Seamaster, too.

Hop on watchrecon and buy a used watch. You'll get more for your money. The brand really depends on the style of watch your looking for. I think Oris is a great watch for the money.

I have the pleasure of owning a Omega limited edition, Brietling superocean and a few other luxury watches BUT one of my favorite watches was under a grand. It's a Zodiac Oceanaire. Check them out:

As you like Zodiac, you may want to look for a well maintained and gently used vintage Zodiac diver. A great many of them were the go-to watch for top divers sand surfers from the 60s and 70s and have the wear marks that accompany that status. Some collectors don't mind the scratches and dings, others do. I don't mind them, but if I have a choice in the matter, I prefer they be ones I put there unless I have a some connection or affinity with the person who did.

Those vintage Zodiacs are among the few sensibly priced watches that have some collector value as well, although collector value isn't worth a damn if you don't like vintage watches. The modern ones are also nice watches, but I don't know that the company making them (Fossil) shares the commitment and association with diving/surfing as did the Zodiac company from whom they purchased the brand name, but not the actual company Zodiac. As such, I'm not sure whether the current models will sometime in the future capture the hearts of collectors. For non-collectors having no forward looking collecting expectations, they are a perfectly fine and nice watch.

All the best.

Just so the OP understands that would be the Auto Speedmaster (Reduced) and not the Speedmaster Professional at the just over a grand price point. Keep an eye on the different watch forums for used pieces. If you can bump your budget up to $1500, there are so many more options. Enjoy the hunt

Yes, definitely not the speedy pro; however, the auto speedmaster is still a great looking watch for that price point.

Versatile as well...... Looks great on a steel bracelet, leather strap, or a cloth nato strap as well.

Beautiful watch, I'm looking for something a lil less sporty though.

OP, I recently bought an inexpensive watch and I have posted a review of sorts about it here: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1015051 . Perhaps it will be helpful to you.

All the best.

Big plus with mesh: it doesn't show scratches unless they are more gouges and deep cuts rather than just a scratch, scrape or scuff.

I like mesh too.

All the best.

On a recent trip to Tokyo I picked up a Seiko solar diver in all titanium. It was about $350 and I saw it while looking for a Daytona stainless. No Daytonas in all stainless to be had but I really like this Seiko and impressed by the accuracy which varies nothing to my atomic watches.
Amazon may have it from a direct Japan source. No warranty off course.

I have this Hamilton Jazzmaster Chronograph, comes in right around a grand. Great classy watch, and good size.

In the pic the face almost looks white, but it's silver.
