Have you seen what happened to Camp Humphreys? It is amazing. I think a lot of functions have moved down to Camp Humphreys from Yongsan, and they've done a huge amount of construction. See attached photo.

I got there in June or July of 1988 and left in July of 1990, so yeah, we were there at the same time. I was a Navy LT (railroad tracks) and was the NSGA Ops Officer and then the Executive Officer of the NSGA. We had something like a hundred sailors -- we were definitely outnumbered by the Army!

Wow!! That’s amazing!! We were in the same building at the same time!! I was an enlisted intelligence analyst with the 3d MI Bn (AE)/Guardrail. The trailers attached to the field station. Yeah, we had Navy guys in 3d MI. I remember they got substandard housing pay for living in Army quarters. haha. I used to go to Osan to the Mexican food restaurant to get my fix!!

Yep, those were my guys: Korean linguists. I ducked my head in the trailers once or twice -- pretty cool setup. We also had a few folks working with the Air Force on Osan: Chinese linguists, which was my background. For about the first year I was there, I worked in the SCIF; once I became the XO I moved down the street to the Navy barracks building where the ground floor was my office, the CO's office, admin offices, a little lounge, etc. I then became a paperwork warrior and about the only time I went to the SCIF was a weekly briefing where the CO and I would get the latest gouge on Operations that week.

I suppose the 3rd MI Bn and Guardrail are still there -- I think everything else is long gone. If so, the 3rd has plenty of room for barracks etc. I would assume they still use the trailers since at least in theory they could pick up and relocate as needed.

Big news! Apparently he's back in U.S. custody. I hope the Army charges him with unauthorized absence (or desertion) for his NK vacation. And now they can proceed with whatever they were going to do before his defection, plus any new charges.

He will get a slap on the wrist, end up sitting in limbo at his unit getting questioned and then paid doing nothing for the next 15-24 months while the military processes a general discharge, and sent on his way. This is too public now for them to actually punish him without any backlash from the general public or bleeding heart politicians.

That right there is the problem. The "better red than dead" crowd has taken control. I'm 100% for required 2 years military service between high school and college.

Absolutely, but a very high percentage of HS grads won't qualify because of medical issues: ADHD, obesity, etc. I also might support alternative service for those not medically qualified.

There's a snowball's chance in hell something like this would happen.

I just saw a report, actually on the mainstream news, about how they are teaching children to read these days. Apparently it is picture based. No more phonics or teaching how to sound out new words. I know a little about the stupid way they teach math these days, but hadn’t heard about this. Without pictures the students were unable to read. So they weren’t actually reading at all, just recognizing pictures to figure out what was happening. The story was about an inner city elementary school somewhere and the new principal. She discovered fewer than 15% of these elementary school children were able to read at grade level and she decided they had to change how they were teaching. Fewer than 15% able to read at an elementary level! That’s not a hard level. Can you imagine where they would be by the time they got to high school?! So they went back to phonics and teaching how to sound out words. After the return to actual academics the children’s ability to read at grade level soared to over 85% and as a result the entire school district changed back to actual teaching.

There are so many disturbing things here, but I just can’t comprehend how the teachers went along with abdicating their role as actual teachers and educators. This wasn’t something new. This method of “teaching” had been in place for many years.

I have a lot of friends who are teachers and I’ve been wanting to ask my English teacher friends for quite a while what the hell is going on in English classes these days. I guess I just got a little glimpse.
