Tonka how do you manage 5 1/2 hours on a bike. The most I was able to do was 4 1/4. Ate every 1/2 hr and barely made it back to the car. Almost couldn't drive home. Was riding MTB on rail trail and had been training all summer. I had a goal of riding the C&O canal tow path from Cumberland MD to DC. 189mi. Tried 3 years in a row and every time something happened within weeks of my planned departure. Finally gave up. Was going to do it solo and unsupported in 3 days or less. Was able to do 60+ miles in training.

First, i'm on a road bike which at first glance may seem more uncomfortable than a mtb, but riding position on a road bike distributes your weight more evenly between the 3 contact points. On a mtb, most of your weight is on your saddle. I start the morning with 20oz of electrolyte drink as soon as i wake up coupled with a banana (110cal). I eat a clean energy bar (190cal) 15 min before riding and eat anywhere between 160 to 200 cal per hour after the ride start. This is somewhat on the light side of recommendations. Many will say eat 300 cal per hour when on the bike. I think i need to eat a bit more, in the range of 190 to 250 would likely benefit my performance. I drink 35oz of coconut water with amino acid and additional electrolyte supplement along with 15oz of water with electrolyte supplement in the first 2 hours. Then it's 30oz of water with electrolyte supplement every hour. I sometimes add in a Mtn Dew or Coke when i've got about 15 to 20 miles left to ride. It tends to wake me up and pull me through at a higher performance level. I've been professionally fit for my bike and have a saddle that i really like. I use expensive chamois bibs and plenty of chamois butter. My shoes fit well so no hot spots or numb toes for me. I started road biking exactly a year ago and steadily trained for a long week of riding in Montana that took place at the end of July. We rode from Glacier National Park to Yellowstone National Park over the course of 5 days. The days were 46, 54, 70, 72, 56, 78 miles and the total elevation for the week was right about 24,000 feet climbed. I had never ridden outside of FL until that trip. Having a blast and performing well in Montana was a huge confidence boost. The 6 weeks prior to the Montana ride, i was averaging about 200 miles a week in 3 - 4 rides. Since the Montana ride, i've been averaging about 120 miles per week in 3 rides, but have been much more workout focused on expending all my energy rather than conserving. (for Montana) My Saturday ride is typically either equivalent to a moderate effort over 75 miles or a hard interval workout over 55-60 miles. To sum it up, a year of consistent training, good equipment, good fit, good nutrition and hydration. One thing i didn't touch on was the fact that i did that ride with my wife and two of her girlfriends. So giving up prior to 100 miles was not an option. haha Also, everything above works pretty well for me and doesn't work for everyone. This route has a section called the circle of pain on it which is a short circle route of about 1.5 miles but it has about 600ft of elevation in it. For this route it was placed at mile 92 of 100. At the end of that section one of my quads threatened to cramp. The quad hurting may have had something to do with pushing my wife's friend up a few of the steeper hills. Outside of the mini quad cramp and my ass protesting after mile 75, i felt great all day and afterwards. We had a lot of stuff to do today, otherwise we would have done a 30 mile recovery ride. Miles / time on a mtb is a lot different than a rode bike. Mtn bikes are far less efficient thus requiring a lot more effort to travel the same distance. I would speculate that mtn biking 4 hours would be the equivalent of road biking 6-7 hours. For me, a hard effort on a mtb for 2.5 hours feels like a hard road bike effort for 4 hours.

Thanks for the response. Yup riding on asphalt with skinny tires is definitely different than wide tires on gravel. I trained so hard for the canal ride 3 summers in a row. Never got the satisfaction of the ride. 1 year I broke my thumb coaching hockey the week before my scheduled ride. Crushed.

Mr Tonka Are Diamondback bikes decent? I only ask because I might be taking a new job soon, and my current employer gets 50% off any bike they make. Might pick one up before leaving.
This would be a starter bike (road/commuter) |

Their Haanjo Comp comes with Shimano 105 group set, alloy frame, 40mm tires, mechanical disc brakes, etc... Seems to be in line for $1600 if not a little steep. But if you can get it for half price, it seems like a steal. This Giant bike of near equal spec is only $1250. Except this has aero wheels. https://www.giant-bicycles.com/us/tcx-slr-2 This Giant, for $2k comes with aero wheels, carbon composite frame/fork, upgraded SRAM component group and hydraulic disc brakes rather than mechanical. https://www.giant-bicycles.com/us/tcx-advanced-sx I don't have one, but i'm a fan of Giant bikes. You get a lot of bike for the money.

Thanks, it def turned out better than I had thought it would. Now just need some filler for the empty space between that and the top piece to make it have some more flow.
