Now for a bit of retro: The Convair Model 103 or Stout Skycar.

It came in four model variants over the course of its design.

I suspect the Germans were first in the use of a prop to drive a generator. The technology lives on today in two applications that I can think of used by U.S. Navy air: Radar jamming pods and buddy refueling pods.

(Next to the jamming pod in the photo is an AGM-88 radar homing missile; identify and locate enemy radar and then kill it)

She was, had you never seen Airport '77 "The Concorde"?
It was even possible to open the sliding window into the cockpit during the flight and fire a flare the get rid of the missile behind them

My dad's 1939 Porterfield had a propeller driven generator, as can be seen in this photo. It's located between the landing gear and has a wooden propeller. Dad owned this actual airplane back in the 1950's and I have flown in it many times with him. Happily, it has survived all these decades and is now on display in a museum.

I stand corrected. The Germans invented lots of stuff, but this one is apparently not one of them.

The French Arsenal VB 10 fighter. An interesting design.

The Arsenal VB 10 was a French fighter aircraft developed during and shortly after World War II. The ultimate product of a design that began with the Arsenal VG 10 prior to the war, the VB 10 added a second engine behind the cockpit which drove a second propeller, coaxial with and contra-rotating to the propeller driven by the engine in the nose.

I'm an RC enthusiast since 1970, so I think I can appreciate the advances in radio control aircraft. I built my first RC system. It was a 5-channel, digital-proportional Heathkit. I still have it and it still works.

Today, I fly the latest Spektrum equipment that includes telemetry, gyros, etc. Very fun stuff.

Very common in lots of aircraft for emergency use -- but is it an electrical generator or does it provide hydraulics?
