Yep I believe it damaged and was stuck in the rear floor.

To me, while it sucked for max, it shows how finely tuned these machines are. Such an extreme loss of performance because of that is incredible to me.

As much as RUS felt he could help ZHO in some way and look helpful there was not a lot he could do with marshals and equipment rushing to the scene and Wolff for sure fuming he left his car.

Senna (with undamaged car) stopped on track to save Comas (damaged car) at Spa-Francorchamps in 1992. He switched off the main switch inside Comas's car to limit the risk of fire. Car still on full throttle could have exploded any second, taking away the lives of both Comas and Senna.

Two years later (1994 - Imola): lethal crash of Senna. Comas stormed away out of the pitlane despite the red flag, to get to the accident scene. But it was in vain (and Senna was already in the hands of marshals and medical teams). See from 10:03 onwards. It first looked like a major pitlane error, but it was Comas who tried to help the very brave pilot who had come to his rescue in 1992.

Ham got SUPER lucky that Ver and Lec were driving with, in Max's case, severe damage, and in Lec's case decent damage, otherwise he'd have maybe finished 5th. Also had Rus not DNF'd, I suspect he'd also have finished ahead of Ham.

Agreed...this guy IMO was such an ass to squeeze Gas. Really dumb race craft and low race intelligence on this one. He didnt qualify well and therefore wanted a long strat so he should have expected a slow start and getting passed by others on med tires but only to later pass.

I saw it live on TV. Devastating.

The point I tried to make: true that Russell may have lost a chance to get Silverstone race points by leaving his damaged car (DNF) to check Zhou, but that was absolutely the right thing to do. Regardless the presence of marshals nearby Zhou and regardless whether Russell could (not) do anything specific for Zhou, those first moments are usually crucial. Those moments were not broadcast for privacy reasons (unlike the fatal Senna crash of 1994).

Just imagine for a moment that you were Zhou, hanging inside your seat belts in the cockpit between the fence and barriers, likely dizzy and disoriented, unable to get out of the car on your own, with a full fuel tank (lap 1), hoping that the car would not catch fire (remember the Grosjean crash). And suddenly Russell pops up near your side to comfort you as best as he can. That's top class on a human level.

100% agreed.

My first thoughts when the crash was shown on TV was that :
1. Zhou was lucky the car hit the catch fence wheels first and not cockpit first.

and

2. The results could have been horrific if the car had of cleared or even hit the top of the fence and was whipped over top.
I think that there will be a review of that particular area of catch fence.

Zhou’s Alfa Romeo was launched over the tyre barriers at the opening corner of the Silverstone race, having been caught up in a multi-car accident involving Russell and AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly.
Having been tripped upside down and skipping across the gravel trap, Zhou’s Alfa Romeo then rolled over the tyre barriers before getting wedged in a gap in front of catch fencing.
Although Zhou escaped serious injury and was extracted from the car by safety crews, Russell says the situation was far from ideal.
And having seen the accident close up, as he ran over to check on Zhou’s condition immediately after the crash, Russell said that some thoughts need to be given about safety improvements.
“In that position, he was stuck there,” said Russell when asked about what he made of the scene. “There's nothing he could have done.
“We need to have I think to avoid the car being stuck in such a fine gap, in the space between the tyre barriers and the metal fence. He was just stuck in there with nowhere to go.”
Russell explained that the incident had been triggered by him getting ‘swamped’ at the start as he made a getaway on the slower hard tyres.
“It was an incredibly scary incident, not just for him but I'm sure for everyone in the crowd as well,” he said. “It was not nice to see.
“We obviously took a gamble starting on the hards because I didn't do a good enough job yesterday in qualifying, and we were starting out of position.
“We knew it was going to be very tricky but I just got completely swamped by everybody at the start, and the next thing I know is I was in the side of Zhou. There are so many different emotions.”
While relieved at Zhou’s escape, Russell expressed some annoyance at being unable to take the restart after marshals attended to his car immediately following the incident.
“When I came back I couldn't quite get the car started but I just wanted to check with my team,” he said.
“When I came back the car was already on the flatbed and they said we couldn't restart. So it's annoying because the only issue we had was a puncture.
“The car was generally fine. There was a little bit of damage, but nothing show-stopping.”
Later Russell was seen remonstrating with FIA technical delegate Jo Bauer about being told that the outside assistance meant he could not rejoin.
“So apparently, as soon as you get assistance, you can't restart,” he told Sky. “So it's very frustrating because the car just had the puncture. And there's no doubt we had the pace to come back to P6 today.”

Alternative view on this.

Russell increased risk to himself and track workers. Leave the rescue operation to trained professionals. F1 safety crews training and response time has improved significantly. Russell accomplished nothing except distracting safety crews with an additional possible medical evacuation. He has no radio and flailing his arms to point to an overturned car was useless and irresponsible. Two safety crew members had to escort him back to safety, which is two less crew members to assist Zhou. Collateral damage due to untrained “heros”, is the biggest risk of any rescue ops. Doctor is chasing Russell to confirm he is ok, he should have stayed in the car.

70-90s F1 (maybe 00s) track safety workers were not equipped or trained in the same way, so drivers could make the difference possibly. Not today.

Maybe he wanted to punch Zhou in the face like Bottas.
