Looks like it's cheaper than black label as well. Next time I am at the store I will grab it. Never knew they had a green label too, they just cranking them out.

Green Label has been around for a long time, it wasn't available in North America for a few years though because the Chinese and Russians were buying it all up. It's a bit of a departure from the rest of the JW line as it's a bit smokey and peaty. It's quite good if that's your thing. Try the Gold too, my fav.

I saw the taste for the gold label, does the vanilla really stick out? Not a huge fan of the vanilla hints but will give it a shot if it's subtle.

I really wish they had a sample pack to try all these out, I'm sure they have it around Christmas time.

They do make sample packs with a number of the whiskeys but I don't know if it's available where you are. I see them here at Christmas as a gift pack. I wouldn't say the vanilla is that prominent.

Sounds like I will give the Gold Label a chance first, then the Double

I will keep you informed on this once I get a chance to grab them!

Need to grab a bottle of Chivas Regal while I'm there as well, been a long while since I've had some.

Already had some Nikka From the Barrel, Hibiki Japanese Harmony, and Nikka Taketsuru pure malt.

Have bought and finished regular Kaiyo Mizunara Oak and Akashi White Oak.

Currently rotating through the remainder of the Kaiyo lineup - The Sheri, 7 year single, The Peated, and two cask strengths - cask 541 and cask 543.

I'd say the 7 year Kaiyo is my favorite so far, followed by the Sheri and cask 541.

Usually also have a bottle of Suntory Toki on hand too, but saw that Costco had Nikka Coffey Grain back in stock so picked up one of those instead this time. Haven't had that in a while.

Does anyone recall if Chivas 12 used to be a single malt and not blended? I almost remember my previous bottle not having the words "blended" written on it from many years ago...

I don't think it was ever a single malt.

I found JW Double Black on sale for about $35 last summer; MUCH better to me than the regular black; And I'll have to try the Green - I heard that is a vatted malt (blend of single malts, no column-still added)? IIRC, they use a lot of either Laphroaig or Lagavulin, and you can taste it in the Double Black.

Just did a check on total wine.com. Black label 750 ml is $23 and double black was $30.

Would JW Black or Double Black be a good option to drink around campfires? If not, any recommendations for a $25-30 bottle for camping?

JW Black Label is one of the worlds most well known whiskys and has a great taste. Don't think you can ever go wrong with a bottle of Black Label.

Double Black is a blend with the youngest single malt in the mix being 12 years old.

I have no idea how the double black is mixed but I'd be shocked if JW would use anything younger than 12 in regular black as you mention. It wouldn't be worth the risk to their rep to use younger whiskey in it.

So both Johnny Walker Black and Double Black are blends as are all JW Whisk(e)y. The youngest whisk(e)y in both blends is 12 years old. There are likely whiskey in the mix that are much older as well.

The age statement on any blended whisk(e)y is the youngest whisk(e)y in the mix, there may be 18 and 25 year olds in there as well.

For those who may not know, whisk(e)y is used for Bourbon and whisk(y) is used for Scotch.

Or so I believe....

Edit: just googled it to confirm, statement is accurate.
