Basically. She was a spinning image of her mother. Her mom would nag at her boyfriend about using "her pots" and stuff like that. He would just put up with it, but there again, respect needs to be mutual and problem solving needs to be a team effort. Why would anyone want to be rude or nasty to someone that's there for them?

The answer is because people are fucked up and not self-reflective enough to fix themselves. For most people, it is monkey-see, monkey-do. They are unable to empathize and see themselves objectively. It is why therapy is good for some people. As a species, we are terribly narcissistic and given to self-indulgence. Maturity is all it takes for some, but others require more. You are lucky to have made the discovery when you did and that you were smart enough to make the hard decision now, sparing yourself a much harder one later.

The really sad part is not what they do to their spouses or significant others, but that they perpetuate it with their children. The best thing anyone can do for their children is to teach them to be empathetic and to be able to put themselves into another's shoes, even when they do not agree with them. But, that doesn't happen.

Very wise words and I agree on every account. I even suggested therapy together but that was a no go, so I at least tried. I know none of us are perfect, but you don't have to be perfect to respect those around you and understand that we all have flaws. Being able to work through them or even laughing at them should come first nature, but the mind is a wonderful thing and some can't get past the "bad" . While I do feel lucky, there are parts of me that feel I could have done more, but the past is the past.

Thats funny you mention that. I watched how her and her mom would handle issues with the niece and nephew when they were having problems at home with their crazy parents. The neice would be crying to exs mom and she would basically tell her to get over it and get back in bed, so instead id go in there and talk to her and get her to calm down. Kids are #1 priority, without guidance it's a revolving circle into adulthood with poor problem solving skills and people skills for that matter.

It is not the success that would (or should) make someone attractive to the opposite sex - it is the qualities that make them successful that also make them desirable. Does someone NEED a successful partner (woman, in your hypothetical above)? No. If a man really has his shit together, will he likely be more attracted to a woman who is successful... probably... unless he has a Napoleonic complex or some similar emotional (or physical... wink wink... no what I mean) deficiency. A person who needs the other to be dependent or not successful on their own is a scary person. They aren't looking for a partner, they are looking for domestic help.
