Profile of a small, but aggressive buck by dcstep, on Flickr There was another, much bigger, white-tail buck busily marking his territory when this guy came literally storming in chasing a doe. The big guy did a white-tail retreat and this guy immediately crapped where the other guy had marked.

You know, they also break their antlers off on trees. A friend and I were watching this and I think that they sometimes try to "adjust" their antlers to something that feels good to them. Unfortunately, occasionally one knocks off a whole side and he's screwed for the season. The September/October floods in Colorado had most of this wood under water for at least a couple of weeks and some of our biggest bucks moved out of the park for drier ground (we think, since the rangers haven't found evidence of pouching). This has been a great opportunity of the young bucks to claim the remaining doe when they otherwise might not have had a chance. Dave

Given that your excellent photo appears to show a recent break of his left G3 tine and the time of year, the missing tine was probably due to a bar room brawl over breeding rights to some attractive and hopefully (his hope, not mine) receptive doe.

She wasn't receptive while I was there, but he's wasn't letting her out of his sight or smell for hell or high water.

I finally figured out something to do with some oranges from my tree. Fresh zest make these orange chocolate-drop cookies really pop.

You're killing me with these cookie shots at night, Ed. Now I'm going to bed with an urge for a cookie.

I would have tried f/16 to see if that first row could be sharpened up a little more. Dave

F11 is a great idea. I shot this handheld the other night, and the shutter speed was creeping down in my dark kitchen, but I will probably have the tripod out again when I do a mega batch of baking in the next couple of weeks. (cookies are my main gift I send out to friends and family afar). Sorry Mark, I wish I could send the taste over the net I brought these to work today and they were gone before the end of my coffee break. Seems the ladies in my office really like the combination of orange and chocolate. |

Ed, put me down as another with cookie lust! As for bringing everything into focus you could give this a try, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hk8vxMA3p-o.

I love Orange Pims. A Brit shortbread cookie with chocolate coating and orange jelly inside. Makes a great combo.
