I believe that some jurisdictions in the US require the officer purchase their police vehicle so they use them to commute to and from work. (I'm guessing here). In Canada all of our equipment is provided by the dept. so it stays at work at the end of shift.

I was at a police function that involved both Canadian and US law enforcement and recall talking to a guy from Montana if I recall correctly and I'm sure he said they bought their cars or were assigned a car that was their responsibility to maintain. Heres a newspaper article from Chicago and Florida that sheds some light on your question.

Personally I wouldn't want to be parking a scout car in my driveway, I've heard a rumour that there are people out there who aren't fans of the police.

Motor officers usually take their bikes home, so what you are seeing is officers who live in one jurisdiction, but work in another; you are observing them in transit to and from work. It's not a requirement to take home the bike, but it is an option. It is required that the bike can be garaged/secured however.

The same applies to unmarked take-home cars…..sort of. It's not required to be garaged.

I remember in my old neighborhood in Upstate NY, there was a NY State Trooper constantly parked in a driveway a few houses down from a woman who was recently divorced. She was getting the ‘pork’ I would say and he would only stay for maybe 30 minutes. Lasted a few months IIRC.

Also, this guy (different guy) went to my high school and was a former police officer but got mixed up with an informant sexually and got caught by her BF lol.

Sexin' informants, victims, etc. is generally bad practice. I get the temptation, but it's almost always messy. I have partners doing it now and I shake my head.

The temptation is real. I never crossed the line but it was certainly available a few times.

That's a pet peeve I've had for a long time and I get pissed whenever I see morons driving around with their lights off. Not even just their DRLs on but ALL lights off. How the f*** do they not realize it? Oh and please nail people that drive around with one headlight burned out! That is dangerous (and annoying) too!

I nail inoperable headlights, tail lights, people driving around with only DRL's running, inoperable license plate lights (…usually just to warn and advise and see who's driving the car; it's often gangsters), etc.

It's around $900+ before seeing the magistrate, so the reduced fine is still probably $300-400.

Please do!! I see this soo much lately up here around Sac, it's really surprising how many people can't tell they don't have their lights on. I try to signal to most but they are just clueless.

It's a dangerous violation. Imagine looking down a street, doing your due diligence by looking both ways, only to be blindsided and hit by a car driving without lights on. It's a shitty position to be in. The cars I've pulled over could've easily been overlooked by a casual observer.

Next time you're out driving at night, look around and see how many cars are out there with no lights on. Now imagine other factors like a dimly lit street combined with a darker colored car and you'll now see how impactful an accident can be.

I was on the freeway the other night heading home after my shift, and I came across a dark gray Hyundai SUV with no lights on. I was in uniform, so I pulled up next to him and hit him with a beam from my Streamlight. It took another mile for him to turn on his lights. He was oblivious and I was highly annoyed.

Yeah I see it multiple times a week because I get off work at 10pm. I've noticed a lot are people with slightly newer cars with the like Auto lights, or atleast cars that have headlights with like halos or running lights. It seems they see these running lights come on and slightly light up the road in front and they think their actual lights are on.

Aside from all the idiots that fail to turn the headlights on when needed I think there is also a lot of blame to be directed to the manufacturers that thought it would be a good idea to have the dash lights come on with the DRLs but not the tail and marker lights. Seriously, how many planning steps did this go through and how many levels of management approved the idea before it went into production? And it's not just one manufacturer, it seems to have happened with a lot of different makes simultaneously.

Just today, a town police department in our region announced that they are part of a grant program where their officers give out repair vouchers instead of tickets for burned-out bulbs. There is apparently a national organization behind this program.....
