Watch it frame by frame. Just because a penalty was given doesn't mean it was an at-fault incident. Emmanuelle Piero was there which means an automatic penalty against HAM. Look at his record.

I’m on the racing incident train. All of the historically great drivers or those that have title aspirations have the alpha dog mentality and do not have any back down in them. This leads them to regularly going over the line and clashing it out with their rivals to win so neither Max or Ham could afford to give up any corner. Move on to the next race.
Shocked to see Charles’ pace, I expected him to get walked down pretty fast from both Mercs. Hugely pleasantly surprised to see the Ferrari’s weakness when it comes to tire degradation didn’t show up here, fantastic P2. |

What's taken into account is the speed and location of the incident and the risk at that particular point which is why I dispute the weak penalty handed to HAM and back a one race ban for him for an intentional hit knowing he can take on some penalty points with a low score of them.

It was an exciting weekend, not sure how I feel about the sprint race format but it made for some excitement so I guess it did its job.
IMO if this was a mid-field incident, it would have been deemed a Lap 1 racing incident. But because it was the WDC, a penalty was given to appease the other team. Calling for a ban for an incident like this where there is no clear intent. IMO contact was the fault of the car that turned in, when there was space on the outside. Contact was towards the inside of the track so there was more room on the outside. Quote:

The perils of risk vs reward....VER and HAM wanted the same section of track....VER's trajectory pinched off the apex....VER made contact with HAM....at 180 MPH....this was purely a racing incident.

Based on the onboard, it appears hammy opened up the steering wheel before the hit.
Too bad, it would have been a great battle. What’s with the pit crews, performance was awful across the board.
