Congrats OP.

Don't mind the naysayers, Chicago is a nice city. People always speak about crime but the downtown area is just fine. There are a lot of nice suburbs too if you choose to settle down outside the city.

Now for those Illinois taxes....good luck with that.

Rough choice to be honest... Illinois is a very commi state... and the winters r brutal in Chicago. In the summer, its real nice but you still have to deal w the taxes, regulation etc. The crime in Chicago is arguably the worst in the nation... as long as you are happy tho.

I enjoyed Chi-town in the summer, lots to do, never spent much time there in the winters. The local bmw scene is pretty active, hopefully once you pickup a bmw you can make some bimmer pals.

Either way goodluck with the move

Why would you move from Sweden to USA? I'd run from here if I had resident visa and a job in Sweden. Did you consider Boston area?

Why not? Have you ever been to Sweden?
Boston didn't really appeal to me and COL made me rule it out.

Based on you wanting to leave, why would he want to go there?

IMHO, people who do not want to live in the USA should leave ASAP. There are plenty who do want to live here.

To be honest no, I have a buddy living in Norway, likes it there more then USA.

What's wrong with Sweden? I always thought Scandinavian counties are better then most central EU, no?

Edit: Norway and Sweden are in top 10 when it comes to quality of life according to ratings

And Iowa is the best state in the US to live in according to ratings.... so when are you moving here?

Well, the thing is that you can't go after ratings and lists.
Right now, for me, quality of life is the opportunity to live in a new country, hopefully make some friends, learn the language and have some great experiences.
Besides, there's no possibility for me to live and work in a city of Chicagos magnitude anywhere in Sweden (well, duh..)

Sweden is fantastic in some regards, I'm not denying that. Parental leave, all the vacation days, how organized (almost) everything is etc. But it's a bit dull. People are so reserved and critiqual, and I just wan't to break free from all of that.

You apparently didn't go to the source of their information. I am not sure what intern compiled the list on their site but it conflicts directly with the source they cite. Iowa is still #1.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/best-st...charlie-baker/

The source they cite: https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/rankings

edit: Actually I think they just didn't list their top 10 IN ORDER. Mass is #8, fair showing but not #1.

Based on your posts - you know the language well enough to get around. Now if you wanted a cool accent you shouldn't have picked middle America.

Writing is easy-ish, it's worse to keep a long conversation going. But I think I will be fine after a few months.
The midwest is perfect for the true american accent, everyone back home is going to be so jealous of me.

Personally I don't believe it. Sweden is often ranked as one of the 10 happiest countries in the world despite the following: it's freezing COLD, it's terribly expensive, the sun doesn't come up for a few hours a day in the winter, it's freezing cold and sometimes there is no summer even in the summer. Yet their citizens are so happy. I wonder why?

Things are not always as they seem. The grass is always greener somewhere else. A lack of actual adversity makes for a boring life in the long run. Take your pick, there is no such thing as paradise that fits everyone.

Northern Chicago is very safe for a city it's size.

Lol yeah but then you're limited to one section of a city. But if that's what you like then go for it man. It's your life to live so enjoy it

Well, that 'one' section of the city is more than a few neighborhoods and a pretty large urban area. I think I'll be fine..
