I'm genuinely curious about the psychology behind it. These make overs must cost a shitload of money.

How can BMW be the worst offender when they are the ones that invented it, define it, and use it where they like? And this is not new at all - my 1987 325iS had ///M logos from the factory.

E30 M3 is the world's most successful road race car. If there's any model where BMW should flaunt M, it's the E30.

In year '18, the latest loaner, lease-friendly, pos 5 series refrigerator white hatch I drove had an M badge staring right back at me on the steering wheel. A super enterprising BMW marketer thought it'd be awesome to whore out the M brand to satiate the hunger of the masses who want a piece of the M pie.

If we're going to make fun of people or try to aggrandize ourselves from ignorant folks who want to be a part of the M crew, then BMW is just as or even more complicit in feeding this idiotic lemming behavior.

a little off topic, but related, I was confused as hell by this 440 on 101 near mountain view, sorry the picture is so blurry but it's the only one that shows the issue so cleary... can anyone explain this?

I assume you're talking about the one clean exhaust pipe... Many newer, dual exhaust cars have a valve in one that only opens up in times of need. Therefore, one pipe constantly gets dirty, while the other stays pristine.
