hope it doesn't happen because it's the ultimate rubbing salt on a wound. first an 8.9 earthquake then a tsunami and now maybe a nuclear disaster to top it off. God help them.

I got some friends from Japan. They parents are heading to Japan to help their family. Interior of their apartment got messed up during the quake.

Spoke to 2 people i knew who were in tokai (just north of tokyo) when it hit, they sounded pretty shaken up but OK. Said the aftershocks were strong for over 12 hrs.
Wanted to comment on the above FB comments, but can't really think of anything that wouldn't offend many american-raised members. |

Otherwise they'll just call you a terrorist. I hope the nuclear power facilities will go back to normal asap. Makes me cringe to just think there will be 4-5 more possible Prypiat in Japan.

One of the reactors has actually released a controlled amount of radioactive material several hours ago to aid in cooling. Though any release is undesired, the levels here are nowhere near enough to affect a person's well-being. I think much of the fear of ANY nuclear event comes from the afterthought of chernobyl, and as most aren't educated on the subject, automatically conclude that everyone will die and have mutant children. It is because of this ignorance that it will be absolutely impossible to build any sort of nuclear reactor in the US for quite some time. |

That racist guy thinks he's holier than though and walks a higher path (based on his other facebook posts)..... He's one bomb-strapped-to-his-chest away from being in the same league as islamic extremist, just with a different religion.

Let's leave the racist people's ignorant remarks out of this thread. You are giving them the attention they want.

Pripyat, though, had some other disadvantages that Fukushima doesn't - for instance, Fukushima has an abundance of seawater (ironic, I suppose, that this is one case where they NEED it to get flooded) - but that greatly assists in managing the core temperature. Most of the evac thus far has been purely preventive, rather than reactionary. Finally, Chernobyl had tremendous human life impact simply due to the fact that, for far too long (for over 24 hours after the explosion), the attitude was "everything is fine". This is not going to be the case here.

Based on reports from JP news agencies, it did not - seems to be buried underneath. Hopefully everyone disembarked...
