What did I miss? What happened, a pipe froze while you were away. Hope you're back to normal soon.

Our well water is sooooooo nasty that it eats through copper pipes. We have 1-3 pipe ruptures every year, all of them on long horizontal runs in the basement. Around the holidays, a vertical pipe in the wall of our laundry room popped, making a mess of the sheetrock and sub-flooring. We cut/capped both pipes in the basement, and have been living without a washing machine since late December.

I was so upset with the pipes being eaten alive by the water that I booked a plumber to rip out every shred of copper pipe in our entire house and replace it with PEX (plastic) tubing. My scope of work included a central plastic distribution manifold with individual shutoff valves, and each faucet run to one of those manifold valves with no splices whatsoever between the manifold and faucet connector. The plumber that I chose to do the job thought that I was crazy to rip out copper when he was quoting the project, but saw first hand this morning why I did it when he snapped the bathroom sink valve off trying to disconnect the faucet hose with his bare hands.

Anyway, since it was a long-planned project, I had a few weeks of lead time to order a high end porta-potty with flushing toilet and a sink. I'm hoping that they will be done in an hour or so, but have the porta-potty for another day just in case it runs into tomorrow.....

So is your first world problem that you're going bald, or that you drive a hairdressers car? Oh the irony

When I had my Z4, I'd drive north to work in the morning with the sun on my right (east) and drive home south in the afternoon with the sun on my right (west). The right side of my face was always sunburned. Ah, but those days of cruising home with Bob Marley cranking were the shit.

My latest first world problem is having a company laptop and a company phone while still having to keep my own for personal business. They say I'm allowed to use the company equipment for reasonable use but I just don't trust them.

Rule #1:

Company stuff goes on the company products (phone, iPad, laptop, etc.)

Personal stuff goes on your personal products (phone, iPad, laptop, etc.)

Pretty much anyone in your IT/HR department can check anything on your company product remotely.

Um, no.

I don't want MegaCorp to know I've had a fight with the wife/girlfriend (or both), am stressed about my M2 parts being delayed, I lost my line of credit at the bank, my cocaine habit's out of control, the cat's taken up gambling, etc.

Keep your work life and your personal life separate. No good can come of things otherwise.

As a case in point:

We had one of our company's pilots called into the Chief Pilot's office because he'd apparently been surfing porn sites on his company iPad. That was bad.

What was worse, was that it was happening at the EXACT time he was in the Chief Pilot's office-- which was sort of a puzzler.

Turns out that his kid had been bogarting his iPad when he was home to watch porn. He had no idea until Company IT/HR caught him.

There's a lesson in there somewhere.....

I don't know if things have changed recently, but at one point in the past you had to pay federal/state income taxes for the service fees on a work-provided cell phone...unless you also had your own cell phone for personal use.....

If CBTL is going to let me just push a button and refill my card from PayPal without entering a password, why do I have to push the button at all????

We recently had an employee use the company shared drive to store some of his personal data. Because this particular employee is extremely smart and also really dumb, he decided to change the password for the shared drive. (not exactly sure how he had the credentials to do so.) He either entered the password incorrectly initially or simply forgot the password. I don't feel like I need to go into details how well this went over. Let's just say that all of our KPI data for the last 10 years was temporarily lost. IT was able to retrieve all of the lost data, along with way too much personal info on the employee. Said employee is now blocked from the shared drive completely.

To elaborate, we are a over 200 year old Japanese based company, with facilities in the U.S., Japan and Europe. The entire company uses this shared drive. When it became known that the reason none of us could access the drive, then to find out it was an American employee, then to find out it was an employee at our facility......yeah, things turned dark fast.

Holy shit! Haha. Glad IT recovered all that data. He must've felt like a real tool after that incident. Is this a trading company? Just curious.

IT should be called to the carpet for this! If some bozo pawn can wipe an entire shared drive, think about what a ransomware attack could do to your company's data because the permissions are set too promiscuous.....

Heh - reminds me of the good old days working with a friend and we were either using NT3.51 or NT4 workstation - can't remember which. Anyway - I decided to remotely edit his registry, and changed all his colors to black - so his screen was black on black, with black everything and black everything else. He was kinda miffed but saw the funny side and I helped him restore it back to normal after a bit.

To prevent me doing that again, he removed *ALL* permissions from everyone (system process, Users, the WORKS) for the Windows folder and all subfolders. I can't remember how far through it got before it locked up and never came back. Mike took me out for beers that night and confessed to what he had done - I fell off my chair laughing
