On an NHL note - I've never been a fan of teams intentionally tanking but I'm starting to come around with my Habs.

Yeah, if they go and win the cup it will be a failure of an experiment--making a first team competitive is good but making a first year team a champion is just a fallacy....every team has to pay some dues.

I didn't like how they tried to get Vegas to be competitive out of the gate - but one certainly can't take anything away from management that built the team. They did a great job.

I get it...new team, rink and fans and it is a good idea to have a team that can build excitement and sell tickets.

Shoot, when the Sharks first started I think they won 13 games or so. Took years to be competitive and they still have not won a cup. Always pisses me off that Tampa and the Ducks brought one home so quick after inception.

Hockey is so hard to predict but what is hard to swallow is, if they do win this year or in a couple years it is all the other teams that have brought these players up through the minors. I would say it would be a cheap victory.

This I agree with. But again look at their roster - no superstars. Only a couple players that had very good seasons last year. Reminds me a little (yes LITTLE) of the 1980 USA hockey team, coach didn't want the 20 best players.... he wanted to put together the best team.

Vegas is seemingly kicking everyone's ass. Doesn't even matter who their goalie is...they were doing it with a third and fourth stringer.

Real news - USA was upset yesterday. Need to respond hard vs Canada in this outdoor game today. Damn, wish I was there.

So they basically dominated most of the first and second periods. First period we had some good movement and got a goal but we were lucky they didnt get 2 goals in the second and finish us off. This is after beating the ducks last night! So in the third we got more of the puck and were able to tie it before losing in OT. Good game but a little frustrating. They are fast, good puck handlers, and tricky in the offensive zone.

Having depth and five or six solid players goes a long way....superstars make some teams aka Pens and don't do much for others aka Caps.

Well, Fuckin-A. Was looking forward to last nights early New Years game Sharks vs Stars and Sharks played minor league hockey. Turned the shit off in third when it was 5-0. Final score was 6-0...worst game of the season.

New York Rangers 3 - 2 Buffalo Sabres
Winter Classic Game .It was the best game for me of the season and the best outdoor game as far as ice hockey is concerned .I think authentic atmosphere of the New Years Day or sunny yet cold winter were contributors besides New York Rangers were one of the teams in the game .
Only downside for me why only one game ? Winter Classic is touted and being liked by many but seeing only one game is downfall may be they want to make it exclusive and rarity makes the things exclusive . However, outdoor is what a hockey is about to me.
I have noticed a significant rule that NHL or other hockey games don't employ . Teams changed sides in the middle of the 3rd period . Honestly, I find it awkward in all other hockey games , teams don't equally share the sides of the ice .
The game was fantastic to me and went to overtime .In overtime at 2:30 minutes marked teams changed sides again , you wouldn't go more equity than this
New York Rangers gave up no less than 5 time shorthanded but they managed to keep solid only 1 goal allowed during that period .
Lonqvist has never lost an outdoor game and managed to maintain this record in his count as well , good job . Buffalo Sables's goakeeper also did a good job and remain sharp thru the game as well
Did anyone see any crowd of Penguins fly past the Philadelphia ? 5-1
What a game it was , Pittsburgh Penguins recognized themselves and I think this major win over Philadelphia will help boost come confidence for them

^ I don't like how they switch sides in OT. Did that 2:30 thing in the World Junior game (USA Vs CANADA) as well. And in one of the games - i forget which - after the 2:30 expired and they switched ends the face-off was not at center ice..... I think that's a huge mistake. IMO they should switch sides for the start of OT (opposite of where they were in the third) and play the entire OT in the same end.
