Porsche Cayman R revealed
Porsche will be introducing the new Cayman R model at the Los Angeles auto show today.
The Cayman R is a special edition which features performance improvements over the Cayman S model. It is 55 kg (121 lb) lighter, sits 20 mm lower and comes with 10 PS (7 kW / 10 bhp) more than the Cayman S. The Cayman R's 3.4 liter six-cylinder power plant has an output of 330 hp (243 kW) and a curb weight of just 1,295 kgs (2855 lbs). Those new features are good for a 0 to 100 km/h sprint time of 5.0 seconds with the standard 6-speed manual gearbox. The optional 7-speed PDK (dual-clutch) shaves 0.1 seconds off that time. Fitted with the Sport Chrono packages, the Cayman R gets that number further down to 4.7 seconds. The mid-engined coupé has a top speed of 282 km/h (175 mph) with the 6-speed manual gearbox and slightly less (280 km/h / 174 mph) with the PDK. The Porsche Cayman R will be available as of February 2011. Prices in Germany begin at €69,830, including VAT. Read more: http://www.worldcarfans.com/11011172...#ixzz15deCcW7z

I don't want to come across as a grumpy old man here but I don't agree with Porsche using the 'R' motif on a car like this. It's not in the true spirit of that badge in particular because originally the 'R' badge was the reserve of true racers which happen to be street legal, not the other way round which is a street car pretending to be a racer.
A token 55kgs doesn't cut it in my book. P.S. Other than that I do love the car, what's not to like about a Cayman and no doubt this will be one of the best 'driver's cars' this coming year. |

Still not a 911. I like what they are doing, but the Porsche purists will still look scornfully at this car. Don't get me wrong, I love the Cayman. But for the money, I'd buy a used 911 Turbo.

This is the first time I'll say that I'd rather have a Boxster (spyder) over a Cayman (R).

I am seriously interested in the Cayman R. It has all of the options that I would have configured a Cayman S with (MT, LSD, GT3 type seats, no navigation or other superfluous electronics). It is definitely a niche market, but after driving the Boxster Spyder I have been hoping for a similar version in a car I could actually use as a daily driver, the Cayman. The Spyder is a phenomenal in terms of power and handling, but there is no way I can justify that as my only car. But with the Cayman R if I add A/C i don't see why I would have any problems driving it to work everyday (except for maybe being late because I can't stop driving it).

That would most likely kill any 911 C2s which I dont think they will do. German marques are very sensitive to marketing their different level of cars and you can see it clearly on the proportionate difference between the price of different models and the performance offered.
