Political pandering, nothing more nothing less. An ethanol lobby group asked that the limit be raised to 15% last year, touting it as a job creations and energy independence move. They got their wish. There is no scientific proof that suggests it will be better for the environment. It might actually be worse, since ethanol has about 66% of the energy of gasoline.
Oh, and the waiver for E15 is only for 2007 and newer cars and trucks. It is not approved for older cars or trucks, or ANY of the following: MOTORCYCLES, boats, snowmobiles, lawnmowers, pressure washers, generators, other small engines, etc. Based on those limitations, I think stations would have to make E15 a separate pump options. How many are going to do that? I guessing, not many at all. And then, how many people would willingly choose E15 for their cars? I sure as hell wouldn't put it in anything I own. Thankfully the X is a diesel, but it is a concern for my bike and my truck...
