Its actually due to pattern recognition and motion adaptation. Your eyes constantly move and when staring at a moving object long enough, they will continue to move in the same pattern as when staring at the object, but appear to be moving in the opposite direction. Just another neural adaptation.

Eating mushrooms has remained to this day a few of the best memories I've ever had. That was years ago and I still remember the feeling like it was yesterday.
