90 year old recounts a WW2 experience.
Too many shitty threads lately, here's something worth looking at.
A generation which held themselves to a higher code of honor and self respect. The most alpha generation. Almost got teary eyed. |

Two years ago in Chicago I was at a conference dinner sitting with this much older gentleman. His wife is a well known author. He was telling me about his experiences as P-40 mechanic with Chenault's Flying Tigers in WWII. It turned out to be one of the most fascinating evenings I've ever had. I hope to see him this coming June at the 2011 conference in San Diego.
These guys are disappearing quickly. Written history just doesn't cut it as well as listening to them talk.

I love watching Band of Brothers, at the beginning of the episodes they usually have old WWII soldiers telling their stories and stuff. Also, have you guys seen the Jeremy Clarkson - Greatest Raid of All Time? It was absolutely jaw dropping... http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/3645...18th_March.avi |

I have been to both Iraq and Afghanistan and I don't think the worst conditions in either of those places can compare with the daily shit the average Joe in WWII had to put up with. I watch Band of Brothers or The Pacific and I feel like a complete bitch for whining about having to be "crammed in a tent with 20 other dudes."
They do the Honor Flights out here in DC all the time where they bring the vets out to see the WWII memorial. Just seeing the look on those guys faces is fucking priceless. I know a lot of these guys talk about not being heroes, but doing it because there was no onther choice. That makes them that much more of a hero to me, that the look at a situation like D-Day and say, "Well Fuck! What else can I do but charge the beach?" I got all the respect in the world for these guys. |

The Pacific is good, but if you want to get an even more graphic account of the war in the Pacific, read "With The Old Breed" by E.B. Sledge. I can't even fathom some of the shit he describes in that book.
