Need Opinions/Advice - Bought a domain and now they want to buy.
Here's a little background info to start. I bought the domain of this kid's name who went to the same highschool as me and now goes to the same university. We're friends on Facebook and I saw how much he was interested in music, after hearing about him recording and producing songs and him having some connections to the music industry via family, I thought it would be a good idea to buy his name as a domain to potentially profit in the future.
I got a call a few minutes ago from him about me owning the domain. Obviously he wants to buy it for cheap. He is a university student thus doesn't have much disposable income. He was trying to use sympathy in his discussion with me about how he had been busting his ass recording all summer and getting the website ready; how he had been wanting the domain for like 2 years; and how a week later when he went to buy the domain I had already picked it up. He's like, "Come on man, I'm not some random person, you know me, and we go to the same school, etc." I told him that I understand his position, that it has happened to me before, but that business is business and that I bought this to potentially make some money. He said that he understood my position and that that was smart of me. He obviously wants to get his site up badly. I feel sort of bad for him, I know what it feels like when you can't get the domain you really want. Is there some sort of contract that can be made that I can "lease" or sell the domain to him for now, but if he "makes it big" I want the amount that I originally wanted to sell it for? Let's pull a number out of the air and say $5 or $10k. Thanks in advance... |

Do what Bill Gates did- license him to use it instead of selling him the rights. That way if anything you could always sell it for what you wanted to. If he makes it big then you could still make a lot of money on it.

On second thought, if I were this kid, I'd just buy ome of the .net, .org, .biz, domains instead, assuming Doug bought the .com one. That's proabably the cheapest option. If that didn't work, I'd just go through the UDRP process and take the domain.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniform...olution_Policy I find it hard to believe that he could take it from me. He doesn't have a trademark or anything like that on his name. Also, if any of those things listed in the wiki article were true then people like the guy who bought the Pepsi domain when it expired wouldn't have been paid big bucks from Pepsi to get it back. And there are whole companies based around buying and reselling domains. |

My dad just talked to his boss to get some feedback. He said to say that I think it's worth around $2k, which by the time he got a lawyer and wanted to take it to court he would've reached that amount anyway. He said if he doesn't have the cash available now (which he doesn't) then to work out some monthly payment plan, get it in writing, and get it signed.

Yeah, you're never going to get thousands for it.
Years ago, I registered a couple of Corvette domains when the Z06 first came out. I sold them both for $50 to a dude running a message board. See where www.corvettez06.com takes you to now. Lawyers lol.
