Driving School: AMG Driving Academy. Anyone? What else?

AMG Driving Academy. After successful start last year, they brought it back this year. $1800+ for ONE day session. I have to pay for my own plane ticket, motel, loaner car, food, etc. Pros: You get to drive some crazy AMG models / Lots of fun / Professional atmosphere / You don't have to pay for the cars if you crash them (I plan on crashing one if I go. Just to share some funny photos with fellow E90POSTers) Cons: Price / Mercedes only / Price / Price / Price / Price / Did I mention price? First Question, my budget allowing, do you guys think this is worth going for? I just want to have one hell of a time with quality people and quality cars in a professional manner. I don't want to be around teenagers in the civics trying to learn how to get their FWD's tail-out. Anyone heard of this event or been to one or know someone who went to one? Second Question, what are my alternatives? Is there any good driving school actually worth going to? (ones that are accepted/recognized) Im mainly doing this for my own pleasure, not really looking into race career. Maybe if I look into automotive industry later, I could include this for fun. p.s: I looked into BMW Driving School, but the content looked very boring.

BMW M driver school. You could also do local HPDE events at the local race track. I wouldn't waste that kind of money unless I knew what I was doing before going there to destroy some cars.

holy shit that's higher than bird pussy! just go to your local track and do HPDE's. not only will it give you more pride in your car, but you'll love doing it and won't be shelling out all the money on flights, etc. remember, it's not about the car you're driving, it's about the driver behind the wheel.

These advanced driving school are all more or less the same (BMW M School, AMG Academy, Porsche, Skip Barber, etc etc) Its all about advanced vehicle control skill, skid control, smooth and consistant lap times, DSC/DTC off and drive under wet condition in high-output cars...
its not "necessary" to go to a particular one unless you were invited as a special rate or free....you can also attend those near where you live, same technique applies to all cars...

About the only benefit these have is you don't use your vehicle. Save some $$ on tires. But it is somewhat of a disadvantage if they don't use the mods your vehicle is equipped with.

"arrive and drive" is expensive. If you have the money, do it.
Three thoughs: 1-terrible value if you're looking to "learn". Excellent value if you're looking to total something nice. 2-it would suck do a driving event with an automatic transmission 3-I've seen a lot of dudes who drive a fast car that they're overwhelmed by. Doing a first driving event with a 500 hp car isn't something I'd advise. http://www.supercarlife.com/default.aspx http://www.raceschool.com/courses_high_perf.html ________ HERBALAIRE VAPORIZER ________ Infant Wellbutrin Last edited by satakal; 09-13-2011 at 11:46 PM.. |

I did the AMG school at RoadAmerica in 05 and Autobahn CC in 06 when I had my E55. If you have the dough, it's a lot of fun. We did the road course, skidpad, emergency lane change, go-karts and other stuff I don't remember. I did a hot lap with Tommy Kendall in a ML55 right after they were announced. That was crazy fun! The winner of the autocross got a ride with a pro-driver around the track in an SLR.
