I'd have to agree with you, these kind of deliveries are often based on time-schedules. Meaning the deliveries are most likely just-in-time, thus the only viable option is by air. This makes for a whole lot of time saved for a small extra cost.

In other words: if it were by ship, it could save you 100 bucks a car, but on the other hand, you'd have to wait for it a month or more longer.
But it's not that simple, if they were to do it by ship, they'd probably have large quantities come over, making up for more stock.
Bigger stock = slower rotation of that stock = stock cost goes way up.
So you might even end up losing your benefit of 100 bucks a car after all AND having to wait for your car a month longer. :-)
Customizability comes with a certain price. ^^

That's how the South Carolina plant operates, everything comes just in time...they do not stock too much of the parts.

If you watch "Mega Factories" from NatGeo showing how BMW built the Z4 in SC, everything comes just in time. Even the seats made couple blocks down the street were just being manufactured couple hours before cars roll down the assembly line.

I was at Vista BMW today in FL & my new SA told me about a memo/letter that they received from BMW headquarters in Germany...

There will be NO MORE deliveries of BMW parts from Germany into the US indefinetly until the air space is finally cleared. This means if your car needs any part from Germany, YOU WILL NOT GET IT anytime soon!!! FedEx airplanes have been grounded and not accepting any more overseas packages because they are piling up already at the airport FedEx terminals.

Just wanted to give everyone the FYI.

Why isn't BMW using boats to transport parts from Germany to NA? Sure, boats are slower but parts that are needed urgently could always be shipped by air but general parts should be shipped by sea. Of course, that would disrupt their production scheme "build as you order".

State of the art manufacturing has a "zero stock" policy, everything is delivered just in time. Using boats instead of planes slows down the delivery chain and cannot be covered by the current manufacturing processes / logistics.

Nawaaz....Thanks, but I'm 50/50 on if it should have been. MOST people here are concerned about their ordered cars not getting done...my post is about if you want any parts for repair, project, etc. that you are SOL until everything is finally cleared. This even trickles down to vendors on here (like LeatherZ) that gets their parts directly from BMW Germany.
