14 day vacation in Australia

So I'm planning on spending 2 weeks in Australia in August. A long way off, I know, but the anticipation and planning for the trip will be almost as much fun as the actual trip. What I need the Ausies to help me answer is what should I do?

Australia is a big friggin' country and the only thing I don't do is dancing so I want to know what people think is essential for a visit Down Under. I'm planning on renting a car and budget really isn't a factor so I can go anywhere, stay anywhere, do just about anything I have time for without packing my stay absolutely full. Gotta have some lazy time, right?

Unless you plan to fly more when you are there, I think you'll have to limit yourself to either the parts of the west coast or parts of the east coast. The east coast has more going on, at least from a cities/population perspective (Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, GBR.) Even then, it is going to be a lot of driving. Melbourne to the GBR (Whitsunday area) by car is a 2,450Km drive! Even longer if you go to Cairns (2,900Km!)

A driving loop from Sydney to Melbourne to Cairns to Gladstone to Brisbane and back to Sydney is 6,331Km (call it 4,000 miles.) 96 hours total driving time (6 days if you work on 16 hours a day, ouch.) You'd spend the entire time in a car really.

We are planning to go to Australia and New Zealand for 3 weeks about 2 years from now. We are thinking of doing the following:
Fly into Sydney and spend a few days there.
Fly to Cairns to check out the GBR, then rent a car and drive down the coast to Brisbane, staying in 2 to 3 places along the way.
From Brisbane, catch a flight to Auckland and spend the rest of the time in northern NZ then head home from there.

In any case, it should be an epic trip!

Going there this summer as well. Going to Sydney for 3 days, Cairns for 4 and then a week on the southern island of NZ. Should be fun!
