Why is it o.k. to use racist terms like "ricer"?
I don't think anyone can argue that this is a racist term. So why is it
tolerated by so many people? Let the flaming begin.lol |

rice or ricer is not a racist term. It refers to a particular direction or philosophy in car modding/culture. Nothing more. I think you're reading too much into the term...
From wikipedia: "Rice burner is a pejorative used initially to describe Asian-made — specifically Japanese-made — motorcycles and automobiles. Many variations have also been used, such as rice rocket for Japanese sport bikes. More contemporary use of the term rice burner, along with the prefix rice, has taken on an alternate pejorative meaning for an automobile that has been modified to give impression of high performance, but does not necessarily have any high-performance capabilities. This practice is in contrast to the "stealth" or "sleeper" style of automotive modification, where a vehicle may have major performance modifications, but the appearance remains similar to that of a stock model. In this manner, the appellation can apply to any vehicle regardless of country of origin. The most commonly modified cars are sport compacts, but the term can apply to any class of vehicle, including trucks." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ricer

Did you just start a thread to see how much you could stir up? I think KL2DC answered the issue perfectly. It simply is not a racist term, it is a cultural term - and not one aimed at a racial, geographic, national. or religious culture, but one exhibited by a style preference.
People of all races, creeds, and nations can be "ricers". That in itself makes it impossible for the term to be racist. Over analyzing everything in desperate search of something to find offensive is 99% of what is currently wrong with America. Knock it off.

i'm half asian, and i don't find the term offensive. neither do my asian friends. and we use the term.
what's lame though, is sometimes the term is used too liberally now-a-days. such as, some will comment on a nicely fixed up import (well, imho) or even just a japanese car, and call it rice. the term "sour kraut" has been used in the past to describe german cars in the same context as "rice". are german people going to get offended by it? or german car owners?
