Just giving up soda; it'll probably help me reach my weight goal of being back down to 190. Last wednesday I was 217, today, I am 208.2, and that's with soda still in my diet, so I figure dropping the soda will accelerate my weight loss.

Not really......

I'm pretty sure it's a just a Catholic thing. Don't know what it's evolved to today, but I was never brought up celebrating Lent, and I'm what you would call a Non-Denominational Christian. I guess "Baptist" would be the closest if you were to categorize it.

I pretty much stopped going to church right around when I started college so who knows anymore.

nah.. it is like people celebrating pass-over.. it is one of those "religion only" holidays that will never make it into mainstream because people like to feel merry during holidays, not forced to give up things that make u happy as a sign of sacrifice to God (or w/e)...

no one likes fasting and even as a christian, I don't celebrate lent...

hell, if the movie 40days & 40nights has taught us anything is that Lent causes suffering.. even the priest brother couldn't take it anymore and banged the hot nun chick

I'm seriously giving up buying auto detailing stuff. It's fucking freezing here, I have no garage, my car is gross and I dont wash it but yet I probably spend at least $100 every 2 weeks on stuff I wont use until June. Addiction is a motherfucker

youre missing my point. i know a lot of non-catholic (or religious people for that matter) who are giving up something for the next 40 days. they arent doing it for any purpose other than to improve their quality of life. its not like you have to be catholic to part-take.

It originated in Christianity as a whole (as a religious aspect), and is/was observed by every denomination until the Martin Luther started the protestant reform (not MLK)

after that, Catholics still observe it and are the more popular choice, along with Lutherans, Anglicans, Methodists and a couple other sects.

Originally it was a necessity to fast because of crop cycles WAY back in like the 1500's.. there was a space where food was short and rationed while the new crops came in, then someone incorporated it into faith and picked up fasting and prayer as a way to get ready for a baptism.

that's alot of weight! be careful man, if you lose too much weight too quickly your weight loss will slow down (not that you have that much to lose!)
