Promotion, or Better Career Move
Guys, I am completely torn on a decision I need to make regarding my employment.
I work at a large company that has 3 different businesses under its main umbrella. I have the opportunity to go from retail corporate where I do business analytics to the power side where I'd work closely with energy traders. The power side has made me an offer. Catch is, my current company doesn't want me to make the transfer, so they have made me an offer as well. Scenario 1: Stay at current job where I have been 3 1/2 years and be promoted 2 levels, title change, earn 10% more base salary, and be removed from a God awful project that caused me to start looking in the first place. This job is also 3 miles from home. Yes, it's a good job and I know EVERYONE, but I've been doing roughly the same thing for 3 1/2 years. I'm not learning new things, but that could change with the promotion. Scenario 2: Make the change to the power side where I know a lot of the people, will make roughly $10,000 LESS than the promotion at retail, and have to travel 18 miles to work. It also would be a lateral move and wouldn't include a 2 level promotion. However, it's the clear better long-term career move and in 12-18 months, could come with a promotion. So, what would you choose? |

i'd stay with the current job for a little while more and enjoy the promotion and pay increase... if you do get sick of it after a year or two, then start looking again. you might find something even better than the other option you have right now.

Stay! In this economy, now is not the time for a lateral...

Good advice...the more I think about it, the thought of putting a 2 promotion level promotion on my resume is better than the potential new skills I'll learn in the new job.
I ran the numbers, and it's more like $12,000 less at the new company. |
