B5 S4!

Well im thinking in a few months of getting rid of my 09 328i M-SPORT, and picking up something cheaper like a GTI. And putting some extra money towards a project car. I have been reading up on these but i cant seem to find all the VITAL info i need about this car. Can anyone maybe point me in the right direction. Or give me a few websites that may answer some crucial questions.

I have the exact same plan ......MK6 GTI and B5 stage3+
I won't miss Bmw service departement from all 3 dealers that I dealt with within a year..only one was cool.

audizine.com, vwvortex.com OR pm me I had Vw Audi before. I had to give bmw a shot after all these years of (hate) and guess what they lost me(at least for my next car)......not that I don't like the car it's the rest that comes with it..stigma, stealerships (All the salesman were very cool I'll miss that part). Not to mention that the VW crowd is much more open minded just go see the thread a few days ago about wheels center caps and all the other post were Non-Bmw vehicle get bashed. There is still a lot of good people here but I'd stay people are more stuck up and on the (darkside) you will find a lot of DIY, cheap tricks good info a lot of technical data.

Good luck with the S4, those things can turn into money pits real quick. The potential for power is huge but to get there can take alot of cash. One of the kids I went to HS with had a fully built b5 running RS6 turbos. The car is wicked fast but the amount of money it took to make it that way is insane.

Audizine is the place to go for info but I wouldn't post really noobish questions in the S4 forum, those guys are pretty intense

Quattroworld is the place you should visit for technical help with B5 S4s. You can pick up a well maintained stage 3 S4 for under $15k right now.

having owned a B5 S4 I can tell you that if you find a well maintained car and can moderately wrench, you will be ok. You just have to accept the fact its a turbo car and with any turbo car you have a lot more hoses and plumbing to monitor.

You know it depends on what you are looking for. A buck wild stage 3 or a fun reliable stage 2 car?

Problem with the B5 is that parts are expensive.
Things that need to be replaced after 75-100k miles
Timing belt
water pump
Control arms - upper and lower
Suspension

MM yeah , i was hopeing for a stage 3. But after reading quite a bit and hearing it from you that all those things need to be replaced. Im afraid this isnt going to be the route im going to go for. I think something like a few year old s2000 may do me better.

LOL, hey man I can get you all those parts reasonably cheap but the kicker is can you moderately wrench? One great thing about the B5 is there is a wealth of knowledge and info on the web and many that can help you through DIY writeups. All these things you can do yourself. Heck there is even a video up somewhere that shows you how to pull your motor.

One bright side is that any B5 S4 owner selling will know these things need to be done or replaced, if they haven't done it, you can haggle the crap out of them and they know it.

good luck

John

MMM well youve certainly give me some food for thought. I like to think my skills under an engine bay are decent. Ive done a few things here and there liek install just basic bolt on parts etc. Im no wizard lol But im decent i suppose. I have a buddy who is very good with installing and im sure i could get him to give me a hand on whatever i needed. Its defnitley going to be a few good months before i can even think about going thru with this . But im going to keep reading up and finding any info i can on these things, because i see the immense amount of potential they have. I appreicate your help. And if this all does happen im sure ill be calling you for some parts
