She was sharing songs with the magic number of over 1k, which is the criteria the RIAA looks for when perusing legal actions. The amount fined is likely go down in appeals, but it's hard to assess the damages done by distributing the songs over a p2p network as opposed to just downloading them for your own use. The goal of the RIAA is not to go after every user, just the people sharing, and to set precedent for copyright infringement cases in hopes of deterring participation in the p2p networks.

The big thing they go after are people who share, not people who download. Take the music you download on Ares or whatever and move it to a different folder from the default download one and it can't be shared anymore! How friking hard is it to do that? Or steal a neighbors internet signal and download the songs using their network so it can't be traced to you. Durrr.

I tried using itunes to go legit. 0.99$ won't kill me.. I tried searching for 20 songs and came out empty handed.. I couldn't find it.. what am I supposed to do? go back in time to when the album was released and buy it? Search every music store for it? no. the problem is that it's easier to find songs for free than it is to buy it. I purchase blurays because it takes as much time for me to download it as it does to have the damn thing delivered to my house. but at least I know that I'm getting the movie I want and not some bad quality version or something worse. I only download TV shows/movies when it's not available. IE: Boy Meets World Season 4 and up.

yeah go after the little old lady, so to say.....
Anyone who know what they are doing and are downloading thousands of songs are not getting caught, why, because they use anonymous proxy servers to mask their IP and they spoof their MAC address from the computer so if they are traced the RIAA can not prove it was their computer they tracked the sharing back too. My niece got busted, her college ratted her out. The RIAA contacted the school and asked them who was using a particular IP address on their network and the school told them it was her, and they sent one of those pay $3000 or else letters. She did because her parents were too stupid to know there was no way they can prove it was her, it was solely based on the schools thinking it was her due to a log on. Many college told the RIAA to go pound salt they would not rat out their students, but her college was on of the few that does and the RIAA targets those schools and their students to pay. |

The problem is that many of the songs that are available on iTunes are not available on iTunes+, at least not yet. For that reason, and the fact that Amazon MP3 rips tracks at 256KHz as opposed to 192KHz, I switched to Amazon. Things may have changed since I last checked about six months ago though. Amazon also suffers from song availability issues sometimes. |
