How much does the age of a car matter to you?
I compiled a list of cars that I was interested in, among those were some of the following:
E46 M3, MKIV Supra, SVT Cobra, C5 ZO6... All are great cars, but something is bothering me about having something that isn't the current or close to the current generation model. The M3 is already the hand me down to the new one, the Supra is amazing... just well, OLD. The SVT Cobra is a beast and I don't think the new retro generation has the same "oooo ahhh" but I also look at Mustang generations BEFORE that one and think if I bought one "Psh, mine will be in the same boat soon" and the same goes for the ZO6, the C3 and C4 Corvettes got so out dated and so "David Hasselhoff" so fast. Are cars like these good enough to be the ones people chose over the NEW ones? Or will they too soon get lost in the sauce. I hate looking at cars like a 370Z thinking I may have to get one just in case I want to keep a car for a few years without it being the fossil at the car meets.

Who cares what other people think? It's your money! If you care what they think, just give them your money and be done with it. It'll probably be more effective in gaining their favor than seeing you roll around in a 370z.

E46 M3, E39 M5, MK IV Supra, R34 GTR, Challenge Stradale....
They all have newer versions (except the Supra) but I think they are as epic as they were when they first came out

+1 I love both the face lifted and original NSX and its been like 20 years? To me they are still as good as the day they were made. Also, Ferrari 348TS and F355 and some of the ones that will always have a special place in my heart. Its been a while and even though nowadays those cars are not considered fast, they are not that slow. And besides, those car will make you smile as much as a F430 and you'll be special. Old doesn't mean inferior and is not a reason to not like a car i think.

Older cars may not have the hp that modern ones have, as there tends to be more emphasis on speed rather than personality (and unique quirks.) And all current cars (except exotics) are now mass produced.
It's that personality and those subjective qualities that can really endear you to some of the older classics. Plus there are fewer (if any) electronic nannies and creature comforts. More visceral, imho. I sometimes prefer to drive slower cars fast than faster cars slow, as they say. I would never trade my 'old' 993 for a 996/997. It's just too much fun to drive. |

Well it seems from what I have gathered that people don't really think the E46 M3 is that special. People seem to think of it as a sloppier version of a VERY good once named the best handling car at any price (E36 M3)
E30... memorable and the first E36... best handling car at any price for its time E46... not as good E92... WHOA V8 NASTY I love the E46 but it seems to be the least desirable of all the M3's.

Age of a car matters very little to me. I've owned cars that were 30+ years old when I bought them. My current project is a 1963 model. I've had a couple new cars, over the last 30 years, but only because I've wanted those particular cars, not because they were new. My current daily driver, the 740iL, is 10 years old and has 168k miles, and I like it. Hell, I like it better than a new one.
Noen of the cars on your list are OLD. Cars from th eearly 60s and 50s are OLD and owning them can be fery enjoyable, too. This constant need for the newest and bestest is what got this country into the financial mess it's in now, and why so many people are so bad off in this economy. "OMG! My car is 2 years old! it's so OLD! I want and deserve the newest otherwise, what will people think? Holy shit! Someone might have something newer and I'll be left behind!!!! The horror!"

The E36 M3 was actually really just a 332i. I hated that about mine, and considered for a long time trying to find a Euro-spec S52 or even an S54 to put in there. The E36 version was by far the worst M3, although it was still a great car.
And age of the car doesn't matter. There's a big difference between "age" and "wear." |

i still drool over some very well kept classics like the vette stingray or a nicely modded e46 m3.... but i've seen some current model cars thats absolutely trashed... it just takes away from the whole car.

depends on the car itself, not the age.

Whoa, I must feel like a dousche then driving my 1991. I guess every once in a while I feel like I'm driving an old beater, but then I see someone gawking at the car from across the street, or the driver of the AMG S65 pulling to my side giving me a thumbs-up Then I all of a sudden feel better again.
I think if you're caught up in the 'age' of the car versus the quality of the car, you're a little too worried about others. The E46 is a fantastic car that I'd much rather have over the current. The E30 M3 would easily be my first choice. Agreed.

I couldn't care less about the age of a car as long as it runs well. I agree with ChrisV above on the 7 series, pre 2003 were awesome, since then they just don't look very good and the engines aren't exactly revolutionary.
