No AMG Edition of Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe

An Autocar source has apparently told the UK publication that a replacement for the CLK 63 AMG is not on the cards. Merc has discontinued the name CLK and replaced it with the name E-Class Coupe. If these statements, attributed to a Mercedes-Benz insider are true, then there will be no high-performance E-Class Coupe in the lineup. Nor will there be an E-Class Coupe AMG Black Series.

Since such a car would be based on the bigger E-Class platform rather than the C-Class as the CLK used to be, it would come too close to the next-generation CLS 63 AMG in both positioning and price. That would move it much further away from its primary targets which are the Audi RS 5 and BMW M3 Coupe.

Good news is that one model in the 2011 CLS range which has been spied on a number of occasions, will sport an AMG badge. A possible power source for that car is not the existing 6.3-litre V8 (6208 cc) but a brand new engine. WCF sources at Mercedes-Benz have hinted to a 4.0-litre-plus twin turbo V8 said to produce about 400kW (544hp).

The 2010 E-Class Coupe was unveiled at the 2009 Geneva International Motor Show. A range of petrol and diesel engines are being offered. They include a turbo diesel making 540Nm (398 lb-ft) of torque and a petrol V8 with 285kW (388hp).

"STUTTGART, Germany — Mercedes unveiled the new E63 AMG sedan last week at the 2009 New York Auto Show, and now comes the official word that there will be no two-door companion in the near future. Mercedes-Benz has "no immediate plans to offer an AMG version of the new E-Coupe," Mercedes spokesman Rob Moran confirmed for Inside Line.

Other sources tell Inside Line that the decision could be reversed, depending on customer feedback, but for now the BMW M3 Coupe and Convertible chug on without direct competition from Mercedes.

Instead, Mercedes will promote the 2010 E550 Coupe as the range-topping model, and will offer an AMG Sports package as an upgrade. The E550's new direct-injection V8 makes 382 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. In comparison, the E63 AMG sedan develops 518 hp and 465 lb-ft.

The AMG Sports package for the E550 coupe bundles an aero body kit (front apron, larger air intakes, side skirts, rear apron) with 18-inch AMG alloy wheels, performance tires, sport suspension, quicker steering and larger brakes."

Inside Line says: "No E63 Coupe. No Audi RS5 for America. Man, this recession sucks."

I can't believe the RS5 won't be coming, if the source is correct. The S5 isn't comparable enough in performance to compete with the M3. Good news for BMW I suppose.

Audi sometimes get's itself into a corner where their pricing would make some of their cars unsellable in the US. The RS5 and RS3 would be ridiculously overpriced in the US for what they are. It makes you wonder whether these cars are even worth making. How many can they manage to sell elsewhere?

I'd put money on the RS5 and RS4 coming. They'll sell well.

I'd consider stretching and taking a small loan for an rs5, though I've sworn up and down I'll only pay cash for a car.

I wouldn't be suprised if they release an AMG E-coupe in the near future.

It would make it more of a buzz if they deny it, and then do it.

the new clk(e coupe) will be based off the e class..the cls is also based off the e class
