What are the consequences for a Canadian citizen doing say...

• 10 mph over?
• 20 mph over?
• 30 mph over?
• 40 mph over?
• 50 mph over?

Highway driving, I5, so 65 - 75 limit.

Thoughts? Feelings? Emotions?

you can drive 75 and be reasonable sure you wont get a ticket. I do, i drive at 80 and have been lucky ha. If you get a ticket doing 10-30 over expect to pay between 200-300 us dollars.

Never be over 5 mph faster than the rest of the traffic around you. They love giving Canadians tickets in Washington State. They hire retired policemen and put them on old motorcycles on the freeway with radar detectors. They can easily pick off 4 or 5 per hour. Do the math. You have to pay the fine in 10 days, but you won't get points on your Canadian driver's license.

Observe the prevailing flow. Heed that advice. As I live in southern Oregon, am on I-5 regularly, I can accurately report said flow varies from 55mph to 80 mph. Don't get singled outside the envelope, hide in the right-hand lane, you'll be fine. Staters down here don't mess around, they are instructed to seek any opportunity to raise revenue for their greedy soulless politician puppet masters.:biggrin:

Get yourself a RADAR Detector, if you don't have on already. It's the best investment you can make, for not getting popped for speeding. In Cali, the Highway Patrol uses a combo of Airplanes, Laser, and Ka Band RADAR. Follow the guidelines everyone else here has done, keep an ear out for the Ka alarm, and you'll be fine.

Also, if you have time at all, you should really consider taking the coast route a bit. I have done that drive from Vancouver to LA on HWY 5, many times (best time was just under 18 hours, left burbank @ 6:30pm, was @ the Peace Arch by noon.) But, it can get so damn boring. Going over to the coast gives you a chance to take in the scenery of the Washington, Oregon, California coast.

Also FWIW, I did a road trip down HWY 1, here in California, last week. I left the Monterey area around 4:30pm. And basically did the really twisty sections of HWY 1 at night (most people would tell you I am insane for doing this). It was one of the best drives I have ever done. There were maybe 5 cars that I passed, along the way, the scenery was gorgeous (full moon), just an all 'round incredible drive. I recommend it highly.

I woudl tear through WA and OR on Sport bikes on the weekends. Not so much the I-5 however, but WA police aren't too pleased with speeders. You don't get any points on your license, but you will have to pay the fine. If you are significantly over the speed limit, you may find yourself in Orange Pajamas spending the night (or two) in jail until you can appear in court.

Use 5-10% as a guideline for excedding the posted speed limit, and you will be fine

Over the Summer they supposedly clamped down on the "margin of error" rule for speeding in Washington State while they were also implementing the cell phone laws and increasing fines for other given offenses($1000 for driving in HOV lane:eyebulge. It went from ~5mph(which was probably enforced as 10mph) of the posted speed limit to ~3mph. With that being said I got a ticket for going "69-70" in a 60 mph zone which is something I have gotten away with in the past and had grown up with as being the norm.

I might be mistaken but 20+ over can be considered reckless driving?

I lived in Washington for about 4 months a few years ago. Some advice:
Most times the speed limit in the entire state is between 50-60. Stay at the most 5-8 over and go with the flow of traffic. If you do get pulled over find a good place to do it. Act calm and go with the flow! :biggrin:

WyattHerb - Yeah, both here in BC and in Washington 20 over is considered wreckless.
