BMW making Variable Turbine Geometry Turbocharger?
I just saw this picture of the 3.0-litre straight six engine for the newly released 7 series, and I thought I should share this with you guys. Complete details of the new 7 series are still not out yet but according to this picture the new 7 series will have a Variable Turbine Geometry Turbocharger similar to the one found in the 911 Turbo and it is apparently used on BMWs famous 3.0-litre straight six engine. So this might the replacement for the twin turbos used for the N54. A single turbo will reduce weight and deliver an even smoother power delivery along the rpm spectrum, as we have all seen in the 911 turbo with VTG.

actually you are right about that, after looking more carefully at the pics I think the sparkplugs are absent which indicates it is a diesel engine. Still could make its way to the gasoline engine.

So the RPM speed will control the turbo somewhat like the RPM controls the pulley on a supercharger? Except of course the turbo uses exhaust as well.
UT,oh then no way to control BOOST No pulley to change no actuator to open/close We're screwed!!! |

i saw that turbo set up when i was in school for diesel. it's used in the euro spec n57 diesel motor. us spec diesels will get the twin turbo (in series) design instead of the single large variable vane turbo. the variable vanes are used in lieu of a wastegate to control boost.
