There has been some indication recently that some of these may come from South Africa as well but I'm not sure about that.

Indeed, a very small percentage of E90 325i and 328i from SA makes it to the US. A majority comes from Munich and Regensburg and a smaller percentage from the newest plant i.e. Leipzig. All E92s and E93s come from Regensburg. All xi's and E91s come from Munich.

SA plants are geared mostly for sales east of the country i.e. Asia etc. There was some talk about them finally taking on N54 engined models, not sure wha the latest on that is.

I think it maybe a good idea to produce (for NA consumption) volume sellers like the E90 328i in SC. Afterall, 3 series production in SC is not a new concept.

All SAVs, not just the North American-bound are built at the Spartansburg plant.

+1 Yeah, the American made Z4 is dinky.

However, it's weird that the X5s have really good build quality. They're built in the same plant in South Carolina.

RX330s are built in the U.S.? I thought all Lexus' are built in Japan.

If BMW builds the 3 series in the U.S., I wouldn't mind it. I would so totally get one. Can up imagine the cost savings to us? The cars would be like $3k to $4k cheaper than what they are now. Just f.y.i., BMW built a percentage of the E36 3 series in South Carolina back in the 90's.

I've experienced South Carolina built BMWs. I've owned both a Z3 and a Z4. I know countless people who own X5s. They're all well built cars. Regarding the poor quality in the Z4, I don't think that has anything to do with it being built here in the U.S. I just think BMW did a shitty job engineering it and choosing the quality of the materials for it causing it to feel dinky.

The build quality of my 2008 Z4M is on par with my 2007 X5.

Check the digit 11 of your VIN. This digit is the Vehicle Assembly Plant. L = Spartansburg, SC. N = Pretoria, South Africa.

Well...let me take it back. The build quality, IMO, is good. But the Z4 feels dinky and light compared to other BMWs. Even compared to my Z3, the Z3 felt heavier and better built than the Z4. Have you noticed that when you close the door of a Z4, it's very light? That's probably the biggest complaint I have about the Z4.

Not US, but Ontario, Canada. The first batch of RX330s were made in Japan though.
