Just do it brother. Don't you worry about all the self righteous people either. The phone companies screw us over enough.
If he has the $5/month replacement insurance then the phone will be replaced no questions asked. All you have to do is stick in another ATT sim card and it will work. Or you can pretty much get it unlocked in any modern country...

Ok.. from what people are saying, att can't deactivate the phone, unless you bring it into an att dealer, they will punch in the serial and MIGHT find out that it was reported 'stolen'.. they have no way of deactivating the phone or tracing it because T-mobile, Att both run on Sim cards, and the Sim is the only thing they can activate/ deactivate, and locate.. Now if it were sprint/ verizon, you have a chance of getting caught because they run on a CDMA and require no Sim card, this means when they activate your phone they have the serial also. So if your Spring or Verizon phone got stolen and that person tried to take it to a dealership to activate it under their account, they will see that the phone was reported 'stolen' and will confiscate the phone.... So to answer the OT's question, yes you can do it without getting caught by att and or t-mobile, but would it be something that I'd do? No, just pony up and buy one off E-bay or something.. Oh yeah, and if your friend were to ever actually lose his phone or break it, I don't think he'd be able to get another one for the same price, might have to pay more or even retail. (I might be wrong though).

The only way around this all is to see what happens when Apple starts offering the iPhone though Best Buy in September. BB offers a lot of 3rd party insurance/warranties, but if anything it'll just cover damage. There will probably NEVER be an insurance/replacement plan for the iPhone. The cost to build the phone is like $175 or so. Those old nextels and other older phones people used to do that trick with cost nothing, so nobody gave a shit and still insured em.

Don't you always have to extend your contract 2-years when getting an iPhone?

A friend dropped his 3g iphone and was pissed as hell because it didn't survive the drop onto a concrete sidewalk (plastic back vs aluminum back, go figure). So he went back to apple/At&t hoping either a) they replace it f.o.c. (one way or another) or b) let him buy a new one at the $200 price. No dice. The policy is he has to buy a new one at a non-contract price i.e. $600. He's still pissed about it.
So there you go, OP. Its not such a cheap solution after all. Better to go with getting your friend/sister or whoever to upgrade to the new one (or new contract) then to pass you the 3g (or trade or whatever).

Just the thought that you even thought about attempting this makes me sad.
Firstly, the warranty is like your car's warranty, it is not insurance i.e. you get your car stolen, insurance will cover it, not the warranty. Secondly, stealing the Iphone is just plain stupid when you can afford vehicles such as those you drive.......people buying 50k+ cars but can't spend 200-600 on a phone? |
