Yeah, I wonder how many of the people are wondering right now "What have we done to ourselves!" Because I don't believe ANY car made in the US today is made from 100% US components. Not even TESLA! And because of this Maintenance, and Insurance will also go up to compensate for the higher cost of everything. Because regardless of who voted for whom, We as a nation did it to ourselves.

And, as others have said, once the prices go up, even if the tariffs drop, the prices will stay high because they will want to: a.) Compensate for previous losses. b.) Now they realize what someone will pay, want to keep the prices high to make more profits. It has happened before. History repeats itself.

Based on his news interview the other day, when asked about how this would affect consumers and the auto industry, Trump’s literal response was that “he doesn’t care.” Inflation and price explosions don’t seem to be on his priority list. I would expect no less from a pathological narcissist.

My projection is a 10-12 % increase in MSRP. And likely no discounts off of MSRP or very few. Typically people are able to negotiate 10% off MSRP with a combination of deals and incentives. This still leaves the dealer with a profit margin.

My guess would be that 10% will be gone, and add 10-12% to the value, and BMW will adjust downward accordingly, their margin.

So for me personally, I guess that would mean making the decision if I was willing pay an extra $12-15k to own a BMW over a Ford or Chevy. At my age my, I am likely to buy what I want and tell the American auto manufacturers to kick rocks.

Even for a narcissist, it is unclear what he stands to gain. It is truly nonsensical.

They tried tariffs in 1930, and thought the Smoot/Hawley Act was a stellar idea. We all know how that ended. I’m just surprised, anyone is stupid enough to think it would work again, in an era of modern globalization.

"My" 550e is at a Germany port right now. And I don't have any signed agreement with the BMW dealer ordered the car for me.

Agree whole heartedly with this assessment. Although it may be a little low. We all know if a tariff is 25%, that means the actual COST increase will likely be 30% (15% for tariff, 10% loss of incentive or discount, and another 5-10% whatever they can make up.) Plus you KNOW dealers are going to try to add that in on even domestic cars. They will claim it's for the parts in the car that are subject to the tariff because they are not made in the US. Pretty much All car manufacturers are Multi-national. Show me any car made in 2025 that is 100% made in the US, with ALL components made in the US.

Trump doesn't care because it doesn't affect him PERSONALLY. It only affects us Little people. When you have Millions, an extra 25% on the cost of your Bugatti, or Maybach isn't going to stop you.

Yeah, I am also too old to say "I refuse to by a BMW because of the Tariff" I will likely just eat the additional cost. Now if I was in my 20's, and living paycheck to paycheck, I would probably not look at a new 3 series and start looking elsewhere.

He was quoted as saying he didn’t care if prices went up, but the full transcript shows he meant that the benefits of higher prices—like supporting the U.S. automotive industry—outweigh the drawbacks.

Quote:
When pressed if he told CEOs not to raise prices, as reported in the The Wall Street Journal, Trump added, “No, I never said that. I couldn’t care less if they raise prices, because people are going to start buying American-made cars.”

Biden failed to undo Trump's tariff hikes.

In fact...

Quote:
Then Biden started adding to them. In May 2024, the Biden administration announced new tariffs on steel, aluminum, semiconductors, electric vehicles (and the batteries used to power them), and other goods from China. In July, he hiked tariffs on some steel imported from Mexico to block steel from China that might be imported via America's southerly neighbor.

If the goal is to have Americans buy more American cars, then the solution should be to make better American cars, not to artificially increase the foreign car market prices via trade policies. Let the free market dictate matters, right? We should be able to spend our money on the products that best fit our needs and wants. I don’t want to be “encouraged” by my govt to buy American just because they will make it easier for me to buy American. Give me a great product and that’s where I will spend my hard earned cash.

According to my SA, BMW will not increase the price on any vehicle produced up until the end of April. Can anyone confirm same?

My car is on the Helios Leader, which was supposed to dock on 3/31 but continuously got delayed, first to 4/1 then to 4/3. I just looked and it's been delayed further to 4/5. It's just sitting off the coast of California. I am wondering if they are trying to play chicken with the tariffs and see if it blows over, or if Port Hueneme is just backed up.

The same thing happened to Daisy Leader. Was supposed arrive April 2, but really arrived on April 3. I watched it, and it killed time after leaving San Diego, looping around off shore of San DIego before heading to Port Hueneme. I’m not going say I know what’s going on but it stands to reason that a vehicle importation port would be extremely busy just before a major tariff event begins and that there could be confusion (chaos) and delays at the port as the Customs and Border Patrol gears up for and then copes with issues surrounding new tariff law.

True. They will need to add the new procedures and such, then train personnel etc.

My i5 is in Daisy Leader, but it docked after the tariffs started. I called by SA, and asked what will happen. He said BMW will honor the prices of cars until May 1. I don't know if that is the sales date, build date etc. Keeping my fingers crossed.
If the i5 price increases by 20%... I'll walk away.

I just bought two BMWs this past week the day before the tariffs took affect. Replaced my old BMW and a newer Tesla 3. I can tell you the dealers were frantic and the choices were limited. I am hoping these last until the tariffs are removed.
