After yet 3 days of diagnostics they have no clue what’s wrong. Same errors, but all tests and measurements do not show any problems.

They said they’ll send everything to the factory tech support and wait for their answer.

I had the drivetrain malfunction in my i5 e40 in November, and after tons of diagnostic back and forth with the engineers at BMW, they replaced a high voltage wiring harness. My service manager was useless, so I never found out if it was broken or just faulty. Took time for them to get the part too. 6 weeks to get it back. The CCU did not need to be replaced, but they said if the fault had returned after replacing the harness they would have.

What was your symptom?

In my case, all the modules just didn’t respond. You could only open the car, turn on the dashboard and only hear a/c fans working. But nothing else was working - you couldn’t even set the car to neutral. It triggers the KL30 terminal resulting in loss of all communication between different modules.

Just to name a few-I couldn’t move electric seats, idrive didn’t work, wipers didn’t work… well, nothing worked. Even ambient lighting. Just numerous errors.

Did you have the same? Or did you actually see “drivetrain malfunction” error in your idrive display?

My car died in the freeway. The drivetrain malfunctioned indicator came on and a few seconds later the car just died. I could still run power for doors, alarm, windows and a/c for a little bit, but after all the time waiting for a tow, by the time it got to the dealer the 12v died, too.

Having issue today. Car died on driveway and would not start this AM. Happened once before and dealer said they just swapped a fuse. Any successful experience stories would be most appreciated. Seems to be a "parking brake malfunction" which leads to a "drivetrain malfunction"

So my i5 i sitting on my driveway. I was reluctant to let flat bed tow truck "drag" the car to get it onto the truck. It is at a bad angle so tow trucks cannot access well. Waiting for BMW to suggest something. From past experience in December, I suspect it tripped a fuse but I cannot even locate the fusebox and BMW will not help.

The car has a "parking brake malfunction" which is causing a "drivetrain malfunction". Effectively the car is stuck in "park" and wont shift out of it, so all wheels are locked. First I need to get the car off driveway and then to BMW. But listening to them say "we replaced fuse and you should be fine" does not cut it a second time.

Update - I removed fuse 132 from the panel under steering wheel and replaced it (did not swap as fuse did not appear blown). Lo and behold, car started working again. I drove car onto flatbed (so they didn't need to drag it) and car now at BMW awaiting solution

What is fuse 132 powering?

Fuse 132 (along with 40 and 140) powers the parking brake. My dealer told me when car had this issue in Dec, it was fixed by changing fuse 132. And just removing and replacing the fuse got the brake to release so that the car would run (the drivetrain malfunction cleared when the parking brake malfunction went away). Dealer just told me they need to order a new gear shifter assembly in order to repair car.

Without a doubt. No one offered a thought as to why the problem is occurring. And I am not sure why they suspect the gear shifter assembly. They had reached that conclusion before they even saw the car. I should have car back next week

Likely you’ll be able to enjoy your car. I haven’t even driven my properly. Sitting at the dealer with no concrete conclusions on what’s wrong. The f*** seller refuses to take this piece of shit back.

From the other discussion:

"y girl is back! I finally picked up my car tonight. What a painful, month long journey. Thank goodness for groups like this, I was able to share potential solution info with my dealer and so can get the needed parts from Germany. While in the shop, my loaner was a iX(too boring) then 740i (gas, but sexy). Only thing I miss from that car is ‘auto door open/close’ button. They need to add that to the M60. Besides that though, there’s nothing better."

"Do mind sharing with rest of us what was wrong/what part ? Mechemical or Electrical?"

"Absolutely! It was the AC compressor that caused high voltage contamination, which triggered the drivetrain malfunction."

Someone else had similar problem and similar resolution.

I’d be great to know the error codes as well and if idrive was functioning to make any further assumptions

RE: Drive train fault - again posting what was on another forum:

"Sorry for you! Happened with me last week with my M60. Car is in service since. They said it is a known issue and they need to take out the front motor and will take 3 business days to fix it starting from next Monday!"

As I noticed before - my car is just a brick. Only the dashboard works. You cannot use idrive (the screen is blank)… even moving a seat back and forth is not possible. If you check the errors from the first post, you can find the errors I have.

Have you tried the rebooting of IDrive? Or someone with a BimmerUtility dongle or Carly can reset the codes.

believe me, it won’t help. The only way to get that car alive was to remove and attach back the 12v battery terminal. Only then the communication between electric modules was restored.

In my case, something triggers disconnection of the KL30 terminal, which powers onboard electronics. In any case, I don’t really care as the car sits at the dealer.

It’s really a severe problem.
