Drive Recorder Didn’t Save My Accident – Anyone Experienced This?
I recently had a minor accident with my BMW i5 eDrive40. Someone rear-ended me, and while the damage isn’t severe, the rear bumper will likely need repainting.
What’s puzzling is that the incident wasn’t recorded by the Drive Recorder. I had “Save in case of collision” enabled, and the 30-second recording option was active, but for some reason, this accident wasn’t saved. Has anyone else experienced something similar? Could it be a setting issue or a bug? I’d appreciate any insights or advice on how to avoid this in the future. |

I don't just want to hope that the built in drive recorder records and saves on an accident. I also want to know who keys my car or bumps it with a cart, etc or even looks in vehicle while unattended for extended periods of time. That is what this project will accomplish that the BMW drive recording will never be able to do.

Didn't have this issue in the G30; however, the car does have to detect the accident. For a rear-end accident, it typically does when it detects acceleration inconsistent with engine output. An "accident detected" will then alert you in iDrive, as well as "recording" to let you know it is recording it since you had the option set.
Since you mentioned it's minor, then I assume your car didn't move abruptly, so the car never detected it as an accident. |

I had installed before I picked up my car the BMW Advanced Car Eye 3.0 Pro with Front and rear cameras.
The initial installation was done incorrectly and the Front Camera continually beeped after an hours driving. The problem was that there are two power outlets where the camera can be hooked up to, one is switched and the other is unswitched. Apparently the Install material on the Dealer's computer doesn't explain that the one cable is unswitched and the other is switched. The shop had wired everything to the switched power source The Service advisor told me that I was simply duplicating the installed cameras and that perhaps I should just have them uninstall the Advanced Car Eye 3.0 Pro. That is of course not true . I bought a high quality 256 gig card for the Advanced Car Eye 3.0 Pro and I have hours and hours of driving recorded from both the front and rear cameras. I also tossed the crappy 128 gig card that came with the camera away. On a previous car (Lexus) I had the same setup and the rear camera saved me from a claim where a street person claimed I had run over them. I had film of them getting up from where they were sitting and chasing me down like an olympic sprinter While I was waiting for my car to be fixed after this was pointed out to me, I told my Service Advisor that this was BMW's problem and not mine and he was to go ahead and fix the problem. When the camera system he has my car brought around and then hands me an invoice for $535.00 to correct the problem. Much to his surprise I repeated that it was BMW's problem not mine and I wasn't going to be paying anything. He tried to suggest that I had authorized them to do the work and therefore I am resposible for the labour costs. I got that misunterstanding corrected I have had more issues with my 2 month old BMW than I had with my 4 LS 430/460s Lexus that I ownd for a total of 16 years. The quality of the service is just not there and the errors in published documents and stupid design issues are already wearing on me. I only bought the 530 because I am tall and the 530 was the only vehicle I could fit into since Lexus lowered the roofline on the LS 500 I am having a series of issues getting my google 8 phone to sync with my car and after a few hours at the Dealership the tech got my phone working but every single contact I call keeps the correct phone number but changes my contacts name to my name on the BMW screen and doesn't show which number is which i.e. home /work /cell. The tech told me they don't know how to make Google phones work even though my car has Android Auto Last edited by Bill 310; 12-24-2024 at 01:31 AM.. |

To force a recording, you can press and hold the parking button. It will start the recording 30 seconds before you pushed it. You may be able to start a recording with a voice command, but I haven’t tried that.

It’s always recording and overwriting. Pressing and holding the button saves the recording to a file so it’s not overwritten.

In case of an accident, holding down the parking button is the last thing that comes to mind at that moment. If you press it, what will happen? You only get 30 seconds of recording. Is it so hard to record for a whole day, for example, delete it every day? Such a useful feature could only be ruined like this

So how can I access the footage after 1 hour? Thats the point. Holding presing the Button does not mean anything in case of an incident

I don’t understand the question - when you press the button the snapshot of video is saved in the onboard memory and you can download that later.

I wonder if you could say "Hey BMW, activate Drive Recorder" or some such command?

You can turn on the drive recorder any time you want to manually, and turn it off when you want to. I tried it a few times and was able to manually save 5-9 min videos. The problem was that it would stop after a few minutes on it's own and I never could figure out why it stopped. The most I could get for a video was about 9 minutes I think. The stopping seemed random, but there was probably something that stopped it, I just couldn't figure out what the trigger was. Back then, I used to play music from my Android Auto - now I don't use Android Auto much so maybe I should try again.
Please test it yourself and let us know how long a video you are able to get. Just start the Drive Recorder app and manually start recording, then stop it when you want to. My goal is pretty simple really - I just want to record my entire drive to and from the tennis courts. It's about a 20-25 minute drive each way, but the car couldn't stay recording long enough to ever get the whole trip. I could always turn it back on if I noticed it stopped recording, but if I missed the message come up on the screen, then I didn't restart it. Besides, it should work without my constant watching and babying it so I gave up. This was probably two updates ago though, so maybe it's better now.

This is the one thing I wish was better! I think mercedes records incidents when parked like if someone bumps into you.
