How can I keep heated seats on in the back

Hey everyone,

I often have to do laptop work in between my trips. So I purchased the BMW table that clips onto front seats, So now I can sit in the back and place the laptop on the table(which is very comfortable by the way.

The problem I am having is when I exit the drivers seat to go sit in the back, "drive ready mode" automatically turns off. So i have 1 option of activating "climatize" for 30 minutes, but the problem is that you can't turn on heated seats in the back during this period (for whatever reason). My 2nd option is to press the START/STOP button from the backseat, in which case the heated seats work, but it lasts about 5 minutes before the car shuts off.

The only way I make it work at the moment is if I push on the brake pedal with an umbrella from the backseat and press the START/STOP button. Then it gets into drive ready mode and I get heated seats for an unlimited time.

I was wondering if there is a way to keep the car in drive ready mode as I transition from the drivers seat into the back seat so I don't have to use my umbrella every time.

Would appreciate some feedback. Thanks

Sorry I don’t have anything better to offer beyond starting in the front and climbing through the middle. The umbrella is a nice trick!

Reading posts like these always make me wonder what bmw was thinking by creating such strict engagement rules with with car being “on”. Annoying

I tried by checking off “turn off when opening door”. That doesn’t seem to work.

There have been a few posts about how to keep the car warm for a passenger while someone gets out to run an errand - the solution was on the idrive screen after you hit power off, you get the option to charge or turn on preconditioning one time (or something similar) - perhaps that might work? (Sorry I don’t have the post link to hand)

I presume that just playing audio/video from USB media will still turn off. But what if you were streaming a movie? Would the car stay powered up because you are “watching” netflix in the car?

Someone in another thread said that watching a video does not keep the car in the "On" mode. It will still eventually time out.

I like Richard's idea though - have you tried turning on the climatize function from the screen after you open the door and the car shuts off? That should at least get you 30 minutes or so of rear seat climatization. If you rear isn't hot enough by then, maybe you need a butt implant. LOL Just kidding about the implant part.

I've a 540i and works perfectly, even if I get out of the key range it beeps the horn but doesn't shut off, never.

I think this is an EV/PHEV specific restriction. Frustrating they allow it for ICE / MHEV

You could use diag mode to turn the car back on once your out. Hit the start button 3 times rapidly and it should turn on just fine. I’ve used it a few times cause the RHD model didn’t move the OBD/ENET port so have been in the front passenger seat fiddling around, but you can’t connect without the car being in an on state

Press the start stop button 3 times and go into diagnostic mode.
