Quirks / small issues - i5 m60
Hey guys,
Drive home today had a few interesting things going on… 1) steering wheel heat would not work. Tried turning on / off multiple times at all settings (first time ever today) 2) Idrive controller does not work in CarPlay (this has happened before). Scrolling does nothing. It does not appear on display. 3) I’ve also encountered some concern brake squeal where it sounds like no pad is there which I think is impossible at 3100 miles. (Started today) 4) creak / cracking now from passenger side dashboard. Some times out of the blue or during a turn. It will crack one time almost like someone cracking their knuckles. It’s loud. But always just once during a single drive. (This has happened before tonight) Any thoughts on these? Thanks Last edited by Mattl0806; 12-09-2024 at 09:09 PM.. |

I've had cold weather brake squeal on my M550, but it has now gone away, and the rears are new. I used brake cleaner in cold weather on the disks. It helped - eventually went away and never came back.
As to the steering wheel... maybe check for a faulty fuse. Can't help about the rest. I have found BMW's new car creaks go away with time and heat.

This didnt sound like typical break squeal to me. Sounded too much like metal on metal, clanky sounding . Didn’t sound good. |

Listen to this... my wife got a new VW Wolfsburg beetle - it was the final edition in 2019. Believe it or not, they forgot to remove some of the packaging around the front wheel disk. Honest to goodness we didn't find out until a year later.... no kidding. It finally dislodged and rattled around like a clanking tractor. LOL

The car I picked up was a managers demo with 2100 miles so I’d hope that’s not the case. Plus it hasn’t made this noise in the first 900 miles I’ve driven it. I’ll see what it’s like tomorrow. Maybe something to do with the humidity and warmth today. |

Maybe something got caught up inside the wheel. Worth taking a good look.

I’ve had gravel stuck in brakes of several cars. Sounds terrible. But no apparent damage once gone.

2. Sorry, I don't use CarPlay, but I have not experienced that issue while using Android Auto yet. Maybe another thing an iDrive reboot might be able to fix. 3. The only time I heard brake squeal on my car is right after I washed it. Brakes were wet and once they dried (like in a few seconds) it went away. One thing to consider in electric cars, is that the brakes are not used as much as ICE cars because unless you hit the brakes really hard, the regen does much of the braking. Maybe rust/debris has collected on the brake discs. At appropriate times and in appropriate situations (like when there is no traffic behind you), you may want to brake really hard once or twice a week when you're driving so that the mechanical brakes engage and rub against the discs to help keep them clean. 4. I have encountered this loud cracking sound a few times when in my car - usually when my wife is with me. I finally figured out what it was - hopefully you'll be as lucky as me in this respect. For me, it was my wife's water bottle that is either sitting in the front passenger cupholder, or in the passenger door cupholder! Some of the water bottles these days (like Lake Arrowhead brand) are made of such thin plastic that they will expand or contract easily with elevation changes. It drove me nuts for a while until we figured it out. I don't know if you have small water bottles in the car with you, but if you do, then it could just be the plastic bottle cracking as the pressure changes with elevation differences. That drove me nuts for a while at first because I thought it was a problem with the vehicle. Good luck with figuring things out!

3 sounds odd as you’re likely using more regen to brake than brake pads on rotors so chances are this is not brake wear. 4 never had that happen to me I’m afraid |

Thanks for the experience with the water bottle. I’m glad you figured it out. It’s possible it’s coming from the glove box. I’ll give that a look today as well! |
