Increased top speed limit

I was checking right now and I don't know which of the wheels come also with an increased top speed limit of 155 mph.

Do the 20" M Star-Spoke Bicolor Black 938M Wheels which are Staggered All Season come with the increased top speed limit or not?

Silly question, I know, but all of my previous cars had this.

Its the choice of summer tires on delivery, not the wheels that allows the higher speed limit from the factory.

I thought so... since those are all season then good luck with that.

Can the dealer remove the speed limit? I would guess not, right?

You either need Summer or High performance tires from the get go to have it automatically added. Currently have the 939M with summers and it drives great.

I would get them like that but... this is a car from the lot. I think who configured it was crazy to order all-season tires for a Houston-ordered car.

So, I guess you can't add that option 840 (Increased Top Speed) on your car unless the car comes from the factory with the summer or performance tires and in that case it comes standard from the factory.

Here's what I was told. If you order the 19" wheels, they come with all season tires, and 130 MPH top speed. The 20" wheels canbe ordered with either Summer, High Performance, or All season tires. The All Season come with the top speed limited to 130 MPH. The Summer come with the limiter at 155 MPH. Now, if you have the all season tires, and purchase Summer tires later, the dealer can change the limiter. The tires have to have a Y Rating or higher for the higher limiter. Or you can change it in BimmerUtility by selecting option 840 supposedly. The All Season tires are H Rated.

I realized this and when my car was in Status 112, I tried to change to the summer tires and told the dealer to make the change. Unfortunately it was a Friday, and a Spanish Holiday here. When he came in on Monday and tried to make the change, my car had jumped to 150 and it was already too late. Not complaining though. Once I wear through these I will just buy Summer tires and make the change. As long as your car has not gone to 150, you can have the dealer change the order.

the Dealer probably ordered a basic Spec car with minimal options. Normally they don't go for the upcharge of larger wheels. If the car was ordered with 19" rims, that's what they come with "All Season Tires and a square setup" because that's what the vast majority of people will buy. They don't want to mess with not being able to rotate tires, or having to order different sizes front and rear. For the Summer tire option it has to have 20" or higher rims, and a Staggered setup, not Square. So they pretty much reserve that for special orders.

That would be great if the dealer could code it after to have the increased top speed limit.

No, that car has all of the options that you can check from the configurator put on the car. It is just that the 20" wheels that were added to the car come with all-season tires, I think that was just some kind of mistake on their part or maybe a customer oredered it like that and after that did not take it anymore.

It arbitrarily depends on the car. The i5 M60 only 19” wheel option comes with summer tires in current configurator. There may be other variations throughout the G60s.

It was the same when I ordered the 2024 eDrive40 back in February. Not sure about non-M wheels, but if you added the M Sport package and wanted 19" wheels, the only tire option was summer tires. Otherwise I probably would have chosen all-seasons just to be more flexible. I'll probably be ok though because I'm not in New Jersey, but in southern California. Even though, I'll probably put all-seasons on when my current tires need replacing.

Seems like an odd choice to me for BMW to limit some cars to summer-only tires.

It can be done and I have had it done on the first M550 I purchased. Of course you need compliant tires. My first M550 was somehow delivered with non-standard 19 inch tires and rims and so the car's top speed was limited accordingly.

After the appropriate rims were installed, there were certain components ordered from Germany and then installed at the dealer and the car was re-coded. I also understood that, before 10 hours of driving time, the car can be coded to its secondary speed limit of 155, however I am unsure if that is still the case.

Can you please tell me or inquire about what parts need to be ordered? I will need to tell this to this dealership in case he has no idea about it.
