Drivetrain malfunction

Just reaching out to see if anyone has ever had a similar experience. Several days ago, while driving, my I5 M60 suddenly had an alert pop up on the screen that there was a drivetrain malfunction. Soon after, the car stopped driving, and I couldn’t change the gears. Fortunately I was able to roll over to the side of the road before it completely stopped. I repeatedly turned the car on and off, and it wouldn’t stay on. It would blow hot air out of the vents. Fortunately I wasn’t too far from a nearby plaza, where my wife and child could find shelter from the heat.

It was after hours on a Sunday, so there was no dealership I could call, so I had a tow truck bring the car back to the house. The following day I brought the car to the dealership. The service agent has been somewhat vague but told me that they sent all the info to BMW engineers to see what the actual error is related to.

Very frustrating situation, especially as it’s a new car and I’ve loved driving it the last few months. This is my first EV, so I’m not sure if this is an EV unique circumstance.

I appreciate any insight if anyone else has been in a similar situation.

I experienced the same issue a week ago, mine is 540xi, but I stopped, turned off the car and restarted it, and the error cleared.

Haven’t had this error happen on my i5 but it did happen on my previous F10. I used to cut off the car and turn it back on, then the error would go away for the rest of my trip. The dealer reprogrammed the car and it didn’t show up again after that. Hopefully it’s something simple. Please Keep us updated for sure!

Just heard back from the service agent. They think it’s a failure of the AC compressor (I’m told that this is responsible for cooling the battery). Next step is to wait for shipment of the replacement part from Germany to the US. Not sure of ETA yet… Based on what I’ve read, this could take a number of weeks.

Could be anything. Wait until he updates you on what the problem is.

I have had a similar issue today. From the beginning my i5 e40 was not cooling well with the airco. I went to the dealer last week with a heavy noise in the front side (airco pump) of the car. They did not have time before next month but they said that I could continue driving it. Today when I left from the office my car had more serious problems: a red wrench icon appeared and had also a drivetrain mallfunction. I parked the car and when I restarted, I was not able to put the car in the gears (D/R/N). Later on when I was waiting to get the car picked up, I also noticed that the entertainment system could not stay on for longer than a minute. The car has been picked up now and they will bring the car tomorrow to the garage…

Hi all,
Just registered to reply to this post.
I got my new 530e Touring G60 almost 3 weeks ago. Had the exact same problem with the drivetrain error. In my case shortly after I also saw a 'high voltage' error. The official service told me that after all it is due to a defective gearbox that they will change. I barely managed to drive 400km with a brand new car

One thing that may help in the future is to keep Bimmercode and a Bluetooth dongle handy. You can plug it in, scan for and clear error codes, even email yourself the error message to show the dealer.

Haven’t had any similar issue in years but when my E90 M3 would go into limp mode I cleared the errors so I could drive home normally. For that car it needed new throttle body actuators, a common issue on that M engine.
