Observation on Steering with the G60- Light and sensitive

I've posted several times after renting many BMWS and have an unusual observation on the steering of the G60. First of all, as an owner of the G30, I find the comfort of the G60 superior. I find the interior a step back including all the new BMW wheel buttons (The older buttons on the wheels of the current 3 series and my G30 were better including the turn signal lever) Let's get to the steering question.. I prefer weighted steering. The G60 seems too light to me. I can accept light steering, but what annoyed me on the highway was I thought the steering was overly sensitive (Tiny input drift into another lane). Does that make any sense? Many cars have a dead zone or less sensitivity. As a highway driver, I would have preferred a bit less sensitivity which my G30 has. My G30 is also a bit more weighted. I switched the G60 to sport mode, and that helped. I could not figure out how to select Comfort mode (Relaxed) but still keep the sport steering (My G30 can do that). Loved the car overall aside from this overly sensitive steering feel and the interior and would still consider one.

I am awaiting delivery of my 540 and can’t really comment on the G60, but I can tell you that what you’re describing regarding the steering on it is exactly how my Audi A5 Sportback behaves. There is zero play in the steering wheel at all. In fact, when going down the interstate it tracts so dead on center that often the LCAS system, which remains enabled due to sensing minor wheel movement chimes because there’s none detected. It’s not because I have my hands off the wheel but straight line driving requires no corrections.

If the G60 behaves this way, I’m going to love it even more, than I did during the test drive.

That is also my observation, the G60 steering resembles that of Audi. I prefer that over G30. I was never big on wrestling with the steering wheel.

These days I almost exclusively do highway miles. I do not notice any oversensitivity when compared to my prior two msport G30s (540) on 19 inch wheels. My current G60 also has 19 inch wheels.

Not to beat the dead horse, but besides embarrassing materials and buggy, counter intuitive tech for sake of tech solutions, I much prefer G60 over G30.

The steering is light in my car, but it stays on center and never drifts out of the lane. I’ve always had variable assist of some type and this feels the same. More assist in something like a parking lot and solid on the freeway.

Variable ratio steering is listed in the features on many G60’s I believe. Not sure what that implementation is, but at the simplest mechanical method, the steering rack has differently spaced teeth near the on-center position so it is less sensitive to input and more accurate in that region (more angular input to achieve amount of steering change). More complicated versions like my E60 make the amount of turn you have to input into wheel be speed dependent, so that at low speed, you can go full steering lock in less than one revolution, while at higher speeds it requires the full 1+ revs to turn the wheels fully from center.

I think this is what you are referring to.

Thanks for the feedback. Like I said, I preferred many things about the G60 vs my G30 but the steering does feel lighter. The other question is can you set the steering on the G60 to Sport even when driving in Eco Pro mode (Relaxed or whatever BMW decided to call it). That would be the perfect solution if that is possible I did not find that in the menus, but this rental also seemed like certain things were locked out.
