Basic maintenance work at dealer pricing
Okay so I called the dealer today I want to get my tires rotated and possibly get the oil changed before the free maintenance time now I know it's 10k for a year whichever comes first well my car is only got 4,800 mi on it.
So I called the service department and I said well my year is up on the 15th of next month and she was like well you have to wait until the 15th or we won't give you the fee oil change I said okay well how much does it cost it's over $200 I think she said it was like $225 now for an oil change for the G60 I said okay well how much is for a tire rotation $180 for a tire rotation holy crap are you serious right now she said that includes balance I said okay well I'll take it to Town Fair tire no thank you. The last time I got the oil change it was 150 for the g30 and for the tire rotation and balance it was 80 holy s*** they went up big time

I don't know I just feel like the oil's been in there almost a year and it's the first oil change I mean it's not lower anything it hasn't moved from the mark since I bought the car but I do want to get my tires rotated I just feel like it's just overly expensive to do that

Do you have a Costco? They will rotate your tire for a fair price. Or even America's Tire, one of those. |

Sounds reasonable for me. But I am also used to paying Land Rover prices. An oil change for my Range Rover is about €280.

How much is your time worth? When I've had cars past the free maintenance or out of warranty, the dealer would still give me a loaner. If I get lucky on scheduling, they will pick up and deliver it back. (Admittedly, maybe this is because I have bought a lot of cars there). They're 15 minutes away. The local indy (which I have used) is less expensive but no loaner, no waiting room to speak of, so need to have somebody trail me, or take an Uber home ($). Same is true for Mavis tire, where I buy tires. I used to do my own oil changes, tuneups, brakes, etc., but I am in my 70s now with a surgically repaired back so DIY is out and I do not mind paying extra for service that makes things easier. If money is tight and you want to save a few dollars here and there, then I would say buy a Toyota. Just my 2 cents.

Wheel balancing and alignment have always been expensive at BMW dealers for as long as I’ve owned one (since 2011).
I’d just wait on the oil change if it was me, but yeah I’m not really surprised to hear this - longer service intervals also mean less chance for the dealers to make money from service visits, so not shocking to see costs per visit on the rise anyway. Just my $0.02. |

None of my cars are under warranty, so I take the BMWs to a local BMW-only indy shop 10 minutes away for everything. Tires, oil, repairs. The techs are all ex-BMW mechanics and the head guy is a Master mechanic. It’s cheaper than a dealer but nothing is totally cheap. Oil change on the M5 is $180 now, and though that’s expensive compared to doing it yourself, but 5-series cars especially the M5 are not fun to work on at home, so totally worth paying for it.

See if you have a tire shop around that offers a rotation/balancing package. I use Discount Tire and for $90 I got lifetime rotation and balancing on mine.
As far as the oil change goes, most dealers will change it under UltimateCare as long as it is within a month/few hundred miles of CBS calling for the change. As an aside, the mileage for the change is not 10k miles but rather that is the starting value. It can then be adjusted up or down depending on usage.

My Jaguar was 2 years for the first oil change, then annual after that. Synthetics last a long time. We go to Discount Tire for rotations.

What I don't understand is my past BMW's had different size tires in the front and the back and the tires were directional so why are you rotating tires? I'm pretty sure my new 550e (when it arrives) with 20" rims will be the same deal -different size tires in front and back and directional.

Edit: I didn't address your question. I have not seen anything from BMW recommending not to rotate tires although it is prevalent on the Internet that that is their position. The best reason why that may be the case is that the rear tires can wear unevenly and when switched to the front cause some vibration and/or noise. I have never experienced that but I guess it could happen. Interestingly some dealer website recommend rotation.

I believe all the 20” and 21” options are staggered for the G60 for MY25. Kind of sucks, because I liked the design of the 20 inch rims, but I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of uneven even tire wear or the inability to rotate.

I switched to staggered tires in 2011, honestly not sure what the concern is about - the tire life was fine, regardless of rotation, other than the initially crappy Bridgestone runflats that BMW supplied, I quickly switched out to Conti’s or Michelins.

I can’t remember the last car I had that didn’t have staggered tires. E30 maybe. I never rotate tires. Unless something is wrong, they are either going to wear evenly or most likely on the insides because you’ve got the camber dialed up. There’s no point. It’s better to get an alignment than to fool with rotating.
