How Does the Car Connect to the Internet

My understanding (possibly erroneous) is that the car communication happens over only a cellular network, and that it does not use wifi, in particular my home wifi, as my Tesla did. If that is indeed the case, does anyone know which cellular network it uses? Since the latest update (07/2024.40), the ability to wake the car has all but disappeared when it's in my garage.

I am NOT asking about anything to do with the personal eSIM, just to be clear.

Thanks for any enlightenment!

No, it cannot connect to a home WiFi network. I'm not sure which cellular network it uses. When you mean "wake the car" in your garage what do you mean? Send a remote command? I have always had intermittent success with things like the remote camera view both before and after the 7/2024 update.

I’m not sure if the “wake the car” issue is to do with the update or the seeming fragility of the BMW servers. I’ve noticed that the MyBMW app has stopped responding for me as of this morning - I can’t get it to update beyond 9:53am, which is annoying as it’s a rare very hot day here in SF and I can’t precondition my car from my office. First world problems I know, but still….

Same for me - as of some time today, my car is no longer updating the app. The app still shows it as plugged in with a topped up charge, even though I took the car out for an errand and didn't plug it back in when I got home.

It used to be ATT but a few years ago started using Verizon so would imagine that is what you have.

Yes, sending a remote command, interrogating the status, getting remote images all seem to be classified as "waking", which in my case worked fine (if somewhat slowly) prior to my updating the firmware. After the update nothing works: lock, unlock, image or status--they all "time out".

Thanks to all--we have horrible cell coverage from all of the carriers: AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. I've had all three and their coverage here is execrable. At present I have a T-Mobile "femtocell" that utilizes our cable internet, so our LTE coverage for them is fine, including in the garage--which does me no good with Verizon's being the carrier.

Nonetheless, remote commands/inquiries all worked before the update (slowly, sometimes, as I mentioned), but now the four tries that I've made (two for unlock, two for 3D image) all time out.

Folks are reporting that remote services are down again so you may be getting caught up in that.

Ah...so at this point it's tough to tell where the problem lies. I'm hoping that they're down and that this isn't a firmware issue. Thanks for the update!

I also have very limited cell service. I have AT&T which gets one bar. Verizon gets zero. We have an emergency T-Mobile which gets the best signal but they are a local company.
