How much is your insurance for i5 M60?
in 2022 i had 540i and my insurance was around $80, my car was totaled in June of 2022 and I had a lapse in insurance until my I5 now as a 2024. No tickets besides my car being totaled (not my fault). So now I have progressive and I pay $220 a month and that's pretty much paid in full for 6 months. Is this normal ? and what is everyone else paying? I get it inflation and stuff but to go from $80 to $220 in 2 years is crazy imo

Got a savings of about $450 year in doing so. The new company, over one year has raised my rates 20% to $600 for my Audi A5 Sportback. I asked for a quote on my ordered 540 and laughed. They wanted $1350 for 6 months. They’ll be going into the trash can too at the end of the policy period, as I have quotes for $650 for 6 months with Progressive. I have zero allegiance to Insurance companies these days. I’ll change every 6-12 months, because they’re all opportunistic pathogens. For demographic, as I think they’re looked at. No accidents, no speeding tickets, no lapses in coverage, and 823 FICO. |

I mean….you totaled your car and then didn’t have insurance for awhile. That’s way more high risk to an insurance company than any number of tickets.
Actually surprised it’s not higher….

It's not too far off though. I just got quoted $167 a month from USAA, but that's for their overseas policy. Insurance in Spain requires ridiculous coverages in the millions of Euros. It's 70,000,000 for bodily injury and 15,000,000 for property damage.
I have Premier driver status as well as my wife. it would likely be less in the states. |

I think maybe it's because you could be held liable for a lot more Generational damage. They didn't really explain the reasoning to us. They just said that was the law here. Insurance is generally more expensive than in the States. Especially if you have big, expensive, fast cars. I remember back in 1990 I was active duty and stationed in Crete. When we were going through base indoc they told us if we were going to hit a sheep, and could not avoid it, make sure to hit more than one. If we hit one, we would be liable for that sheep's wool, market value, milk, offspring etc. for up to 7 generations. If we hit more than one, that meant the sheep herder was not in proper control of their flock and it was his fault his sheep had gotten killed. Also you need to have good coverage here. Overseas in general, but definitely in Spain and Italy, if you are in an accident you are likely to be found guilty of DWA, "Driving while American". So regardless of who is really at fault, the police will assign blame to you. We have DWB here as well. I have a friend right now who is Active Duty, that was riding an Electric bicycle last week, and got hit from behind by a Vespa who did not see him signal he was turning left. The lady riding the vespa fell and cracked her skull and was taken to the hospital. The Police wouldn't even take his statement, and so Her family is now suing him for damages. His bicycle was not even damaged. She hit his rear tire. But since he's American, and Black as well, they are saying it must be his fault. |

The economics of car ownership outside the US can be vastly different. I haven’t lived in the UK since the start of 1998, but recall being shocked at how much more affordable it was when I moved to Canada and then to the US - insurance, gas (obviously) and sticker prices relative to income levels.

Insurance will vary by location and the specific options and limits on your policy.
That said, for my i5 eDrive40, Amica charges me 974.50 for 6 months. But they are a mutual insurance company so I will get back 20% by check later in the year. |

Since we're including eDrive40s now...
I pay $158 per month for my 2024 iDrive40 and my wife's 2013 Mazda CX-9. Full coverage including comprehensive. Our insurance is with Costco - we've been with them for years because they seemed to have the best deal for us. We have also had a couple of claims over the past few years and the rates stayed the same after the first one, and raised only slightly after the second one. The claims were also easily dealt with. I would recommend Costco auto insurance.

Just an update, I switched Insurance companies this weekend. I went with Travelers. $459 for 6 months with the Audi, even though I won’t have it that long. $628 for 6 months with the 540 when I transfer.
This is with a multi policy discount (switched my umbrella policy to them as well). |

However, I thought it might be useful to get these numbers out there for an eDrive40 in southern CA. BTW, the reason my car went up, is because the wife's accident caused one of the policy-wide discounts to cease, therefore both vehicles pay more than before.

I pay $170/mo with higher than normal coverages (250/500 - call me paranoid) with State Farm. I check around every now and then and it's competitive here in NC. No accidents/tickets in my history. USAA and Progressive were over $200/mo.

We have Amica, 500,000/1,000,000 (umbrella liability, too), no accidents, clean driving record, over 65 and pay $1284/year for the '24 i5 M60. My wife's '22 Audi Q3 is $714/year. FWIW.
