Does anyone know how much heat the panoramic sunroof blocks?

I’m tinting my other windows and trying to decide if it’s necessary to tint the sunroof.

Fortunately there is the black cover for when it’s really hot but I like driving with the cover open to let in more light most of the time if possible.

I don't know for sure, but since I am in sunny southern California I opted to not get the Sky Lounge roof for two reasons:

1. I thought it may let in more heat than the smaller sunroof, and
2. I thought that a glass roof may be more fragile than a mostly metal roof.

Oddly, just last week we were driving along in town and something must have fallen from a tree because we heard a loud bang on the roof of the car. I suspect a large pine cone may have fallen but not sure. There was no damage to the roof of our Mazda, but it made me wonder about what may have happened if I had all glass up there.

Long post to say, I would recommend you get the roof tinted in order to minimize any heat from coming in. I think they have tint that is specially designed to block heat. :-)

I’m in overcast Washington so I needed the sky lounge. It looks black from the outside, but I will ask about it when I go for tint.

I have the Sky Lounge on both an i7 and i5. Since there is a rolling cover that entirely blocks the glass, I didn't see a need to tint them. Moreover, even on sunny days in California (albeit winter), the heat seems well-controlled when the glass is exposed.

It is a different story on a Tesla Model Y, for example, which doesn't have a cover and is always open to the elements.

I have the regular sunroof and plan to tint mine. I like it dark even when I’m driving with it open. I do it for heat rejection mostly.

Suppose winter weather and cold coming through the panoramic roof are any indication the G60 is much better at keeping the elements out than the G05's glass roof.

It might be a non-factor, but I've read in several tinting threads some tint shops won't do sunroofs/moonroofs due to a concern they might trap too much heat and break. Wouldn't hurt to check ahead.

that's what I've heard from both local xpel tint installers as well. They said the extra heat has nowhere to go and end up making panoramic roof glass much hotter...(and prone to breaking, depending on the glass used by the manufacturer)

I have a ford 350 and ford expedition with the huge sunroofs and tinted both with no problems so far for 2 years.

What did you end up deciding? I just got my G60 and the factory sun roof tint actually looks pretty dark. It may just be my imagination but it looks darker than the factory tint that came on my G26 sunroof.

I’m in NorCal and haven’t had a problem - if it’s really hot I’m closing the roof shade and find it pretty manageable.

I drove on our hottest days this summer, in the upper 80’s. I can reach up and put my hand on the glass roof without burning my hand. I do close the sunshade when I first get in for about 5 minutes until the car cools off. Then I open it back up.

I’m in the East Bay and we’ve had some triple digit days this summer. Routinely driving in the 90’s without an issue.

I live in the Midwest. I have a quote to do Xpel Ceramic Coating, Ultimate Plus PPF on the full front (Hood, Bumper, A Pillars, fenders) and XPEL Prime XR on the windows.

I'm passing on tinting the sky lounge roof, and front windshield for a couple of reasons:

• I'm not sure I want the installer pouring water all over the front windshield area and electronics, even under the best of circumstances and diligence. I had a bad experience with an Acura and them contaminating the center camera stack years ago.
• The heat rejection on the SkyLounge Roof may be sufficient with OEM tint to mitigate the worst of it

I will of course reevaluate the situation with the roof once I've had some time to live with it. I'll try to do some reading about the 'cons' of tinting the pano roof, and heat tolerance.

I can see a 'pro' of not having it tinted in this climate. I may be nice during the winter to let additional light into the cabin and maybe even warm it up a bit on cold days where it's deceivingly sunny out

Thanks for confirming, Richard. I've lived in the Walnut Creek/Concord area before, so I feel confident that if you're confirming it's livable, I won't have any issues with it here in Ohio!

One caveat I will note - I religiously pre-condition the i5 which is superb, not sure if that’s quite the same with the 540.

Thanks, good call out. Maybe I can remotely open my garage door and do the remote start option? I’ll have to play around with it…next year. With an October arrival time likely mild low 70s here by then 😊

a acorn did fall on my glass roof . a few. I went to park and got back that my car full of acorns. a squirrel must of tried to break glass not sure. hahaha
I like the glass in southern cal. but I did opt to tint with high heat resistant tint since I go Las Vegas NV often.

I think I'm going to adopt the "wait and see" approach. From the videos and forum user reports is seems dark. Maybe 35 or 40% VR, I can't tell.

I've gotten a quote to have mine tinted, but I'll forgo the pano tint unless it turns out that when it's open it feels like it's got too much heat transference and the sun is beating down on me. Given the 50/50 summer split between clouds/rain and sun, in the Midwest, I'm optimistic the standard tint will be sufficient.
