Adaptive LED / Selective Beam

I see reference to adaptive LED and selective beam and sometimes to matrix headlights. Do they all refer to the same thing, which is that the high beam will be adjusted not to blind the car directly in front and oncoming cars?

Is the BMW implementation simply blocking out the light edge to edge of the car or by the shape the car, meaning the part above the car to the sky is still on high beam?
