Speed camera detectors
Whilst I condone adherence to all speed limits.... I am interested in purchasing a camera detector.
Initially I looked for dash cams that included this. I've seen lots advertised but not sure on accuracy etc. Looking for recommendations and suggestions! |

If you can't remember where the speed cameras are, then speeding isn't for you. That's my recommendation.

I subscribe to the speed and red light camera thing through BMW Connected Drive. It works well. My sister gets the alerts through Waze.

I have a Uniden R7 that does a pretty good job of alerting where speed cameras are, as well as red light cameras
It's also a good radar detector overall. |

You should add DC to that list. I swear every time I have to go into DC I feel a strange tugging on my pants pocket. It's the stupid DC government trying to take as much money from me as they can through aggressive speed camera use, red light cameras with very short yellow durations for the speed, much lower speed limits than are reasonable for the road, mobile speed cameras they can move around, and overly aggressive meter maids/parking enforcement.

Some new detectors also offer networking of other similar detectors in your vicinity. This allows sharing of real-time alerts. My older 9500ix does not, so I cannot speak to its efficacy. Thinking about buying a new one.

I recommend driving with Waze if you can. I just drive with Waze through my Android Auto. Also people will call out the mobile speed photoradars and cops as a bonus and other stuff

Does waze alert you of speeding cameras even if you don't have a route/destination entered?

Yeah like celsdogg mentions it does but I do notice if you don't have a planned route, you might get the vocal alert like a bit late because Waze doesn't think you're going onto that road but you suddenly turn on it you know. But you can still see the symbols/icon on the map from afar.

But yeah if you more on something like a radar detector that is a whole other game for sure, if it was legal I'd give it a try but apparently they have radar detectors detectors here... I'd lose it quick (they seize it + fine). |

I think a combination of Waze and a good detector (with a database) covers most angles.

Since I 100% of the time put in a destination in Waze when I am driving, so that I am alerted in advance of traffic issues, I cannot tell you what happens with Waze if you are driving without guidance. Regarding radar detectors, I used the Valentine for a couple of decades. The last one I had did not have location-specific camera alerts, though it would pick up the radar from a camera system. I have aged out of using radar detectors, however. |

Maybe Highway Radar is not available on Apple? I didn't see it in the App Store. I imagine the usefulness of one of these apps is directly related to how many users.

Uniden hands down! GPS enabled and updates available for Red Light Cams and Speed Cams. You can self mark spots too where smokey likes to hang out! This in conjunction with Google Maps or Waze gives up those bad guys looking to ruin someone's day! Lol, but honestly, the Uniden has never failed me!

Highway radar is almost a direct copy of JBV1 if not an exact copy that networks via Bluetooth to a Valentine V1G2 . https://www.rdforum.org/threads/132763/ |

I believe both Waze and Apple Maps warn you of "fixed" speed cameras. Based upon user alerts they also warn of random speed checks ahead. BMW has Camera Alert subscription for $25/year (I have that and love it because if it saves me from a single ticket it's paid itself off).
Lastly, if you are handy you can add a small but strong flash head next to your back number plate light that is triggered by a slave sensor and pointed right at your number plate. When you speed past a camera and get flashed, this flash would go off too which would over expose your plate to the extreme and therefore it cannot be read . Do this at your own risk because its probably not legal. |
