i5 M60 Driving Range and Charging Speed

Hi,

Just thought I'd share a recent highway trip I took with respect to energy consumption and charging speeds for those who want to know:

Temperature: 25-30 degrees Celsius (68F to 86 F)
Elevation Change - Minimal (less than 50m of 160 feet)
Tires - 20 in, Hankook Ventus A/S Tires
Average Speeds - 125 km/h (~ 78mph)
Average Consumption - Between 21-23kwh/100km
Driving Mode - Efficient (but not max range); AC and ventilated seats on
Max Charging speeds - @ around 25% SoC, even on a 200kw station and higher, I only hit a peak of about 135kw and sustained this level to around 50% SoC, after 50% SoC, my charging speeds dropped to between 90-100kw. I only charged to around 60% SoC so I didn't get a sense of whether charging speeds would drop further.
Projected Range - 350-400km (217mi to 250 miles)

Interestingly, I found that when I inputted a fast charging station (>200kwh), the car would activate its cooling fan, which dramatically increases energy consumption. For example, when I'm idling and AC is on, my typical consumption is between 1.5-2kwh/h. However, when I'm idling and a fast charging station is inputted as the destination, the idling consumption jumps to 10kwh/h.

All in all, I found that at my traveling speeds and environmental conditions, I probably had about 350-400km (217mi to 250 miles) of range. With the BMW app, it would typically calculate destinations so that I would arrive with a charge of about 10%. It typically would pick the fastest charging stations along my route when doing trip planning.

Hope this info is useful for those who are doing their research.

Great summary thanks for taking the time to share! So that works out at 2.7 to 3.0 mi/kWh for those using imperial measures. It makes sense that the car would optimize preconditioning the battery to maximize DC charging rate - at the expense of some SOC if you’re on your way to a charging station.

These consumption results are different from my experience. I drive a bit slower, maybe 112km/h, and I’ve been seeing 16-18 kWh/100km on long trips. Sometimes as low as 15.5 kWh/100km. My car has 20” wheels with Continental EcoContact 6Q summer tires. I don’t bother with efficient mode.

My charging experience is similar. I think the highest I’ve seen is 144kW. Probably more an indication that the chargers are less than great…

Interesting consumption - does that mean that you can get close to 500km of range? Are you also driving the highway in D mode or B mode?

With respect to charging - I think it's a BMW thing. The chargers I was using were rated at 350kw and i had pre-conditioned the vehicle and I was the only one using the charging station. The only thing that was not ideal was that the ambient temperature was around 27 C. I've read that slightly colder temperatures (~15 C) are more ideal for charging...

My experience, most of my driving is highway commutes, I’m getting 3.6mi/kWh or so over the summer months 290-300miles of range from my i5M60, 460-480km, frequently 60-70mph, 95-115km/h.

I think the most predicted range I’ve ever seen is 400km at 80% charge, which would be 500km at 100%. This only happens on long road trips (150+ km). Normally it’s around 400km (and 350km in the winter).

I drive in D mode, on the lowest regen setting.
