Side view mirror is squeaky!

When I approach or move away from the car and the side view mirror is coming in or out, it sounds like an old door in a haunted house. Anyone else have this? I’d be happy to grease it but I don’t even know where to apply it.

Right now it’s just the drivers side.

Thanks!

That's a warranty issue. Take it to the dealer so you don't have to worry about it too much.

Same issue, but I took it to the dealership and they fixed it. So far it has not resurfaced….

Just noticed this today for the first time as the weather is getting warmer.

I assume others got this fixed at their dealers like digriz ?

Alas, mine has resurfaced. It seems that humidity/rain/dust and combination thereof cause the squeak to reappear. To me, it sounds like a metal-on-metal noise.

It's possible that when I asked the dealership to fix it, they just lubricated the joint, and now it seems like a more permanent solution is needed...

+1 I have this issue on the drivers side. Seems the plastic rubs and squeaks. Looks to me like BMW tried to make the gap too small and the outer plastics that are not supposed to touch rub on each other.

Has anyone found a lubricant that works well and will not damage the plastic / paint? I was thinking of trying a silicone spray.

As others have said, sure i can warranty this but I'm guessing they'll just lube it and give it back. I don't mind doing the lube job myself if I knew what kind to use.

It’s finally warm enough for me to have this issue. Driver’s side only. I agree that it looks like plastic rubbing on plastic. It expands with the heat. I hate to drive to the dealership for something so minor, but I would like to get the OTA, so I might.

You'll have to have some sort of iDrive issue in order for them to give you the software update and get paid for it as a warranty service. So, maybe you're having some intermittent Car Play issues or something like that...

I brought my car to the dealer for this issue and the knocking HVAC sound (see other thread). This is what I was told:

1. There is a service bulletin for this issue.

2. BMW recommends the technicians first lubricate the mirror to see if that resolves the issue.

3. If not, the customer should bring the car back and BMW will replace the entire mirror assembly.

I noticed a scratch on mine. I wonder if someone knocked against it.

Update. Took it to the dealer and they said it was fixed. Problem is now back! I ended up turning off the mirrors in/out when locking/unlocking. I can’t waste my time going back to the dealer until they are sure they have a fix. Anyone have it fixed and it hasn’t come back?
Thanks!

FYI...this issue has now surfaced on the G70 (current 7 Series forum). Thankfully mine are silent, but it is not just the 5 Series and one member says there is a Service Bulletin to fix the mirror(s).

My guess is that dealers just try to put a little lubricant on it somewhere and call it good. I’ve disable the folding on lock for now and will bring it up when I have a bigger issue to go deal with. Or just reactivate when the weather isn’t as hot. Given how bulky the mirrors are, I’m not sure folding them really achieves much tbh.

Mine only did it when summer first started with the change in temperature. It doesn’t seem to do it anymore and it’s been warm for over a month now. The car was new in the winter, maybe the lube needed to warm up.

Are you folks talking about a clear "squeak" noise? It's not like I want look for problems on my car where none exist, but I'm just curious because my mirrors always make a noise when moving, but not something I consider a squeak. They just sound like a little servo is moving them. Does anyone have a video of the sound? If I think about it, I'll try to record what mine sounds like and post it. To me, it just sounds like a normal motion sound.

You’d know it if you heard it! It’s more like a creaky door, not like a servo sound. It’s quite loud and gets your attention as you’re walking to/from the car.

Ok, thanks. That's what I thought (or was hoping for at least).

You can’t miss it, it sounds like plastic rubbing against plastic and I think it gets amplified by the space behind the mirror to make it much louder than it would otherwise be
